I suppose I'll give this a go. Never done an FX Wars challenge before, but I've found myself doing quite a bit of FX at work lately, seems like a great way to learn some new skills and polish a few that need some fine tuning!
Probably be doing something piratey.

Decided on a sequence last night and got a little chunk of modeling done.
I'm going to be doing the interior of a pirate ship, with the kboom ball exploding near some barrels of powder.
I'll be using max with some reactor rigid bodies, TP, Fume FX, and maybe, just maybe Realflow if time permits an exterior shot.
I will try to post a bit of progress tonight.

Got a bit of modeling done last night and tonight. Going for an interior of a pirate ship. I tried to crank out as much as I could, I know I'm going to be away from my computer for the next few days!
Did a scatter for the coins all over the floor. Lots of duplicating of barrels and wood planks.

Hey thanks man.
I cranked away quite a bit this weekend to finish this damn model, just a couple items to finish up and I can get to doing some simulations.
I've been thrown in the deep end learning FX at work the past few months so this will hopefully be a good test for me.
Here's a few more screenshots and a quick animation preview of my overall scene.
Still not 100% happy with the ship rocking and the cannonball rolling, but that should be a fairly quick fix.
I also have a decent character from a side project I will probably drop into the hammock so it's not just swinging empty.

Great job on the ship interior and lighting. i think the lighting could be a little more foggy in there, and muggy. but it looks good, and the rocking is good - but a tad aggressive.
your ship gives me an idea - since i have none yet :eek:
how do you plan to do the boom?

Thanks for the replies guys, and so sorry I have been just horrible at updating this! Looking forward to see what everyone came up with next week!
PixElroy - The sequence I have, the ship rocks and a lantern falls, starting a small fire on the floor, the ball rolls through it, lighting the wick. The bomb then rolls over near the powder barrels, and kablewey!
I've been working my ass of on this thing lately playing catch up. I'm re-simming my fume fx for the floor fire and still tweaking the last shot quite a bit. Also need a real background for the last shot, for the time being it's just an image I found online.
But alas, here's a few renders I've cranked out so far, hoping all will turn out well!

This looks like a pretty big challenge - not only explosion but water and character. I will better get on with work ;)

Here's the final animation:
I had a lot of fun doing this, it turned out being way longer than I had initially planned for.
Some things I learned along the way:
Mental Ray is more trouble than it's worth, I think this project turned me into a Final Render or VRay user.
Realflow is great, but the realwave object seems to be a little behind. If I had to do it over again, I would probably block out some time to do a water sim with Hybrido fluids.
Everyone's entries look great! I think my simulation is probably one of the weakest points in my animation, especially upon seeing some of the others submittied, but what the hell, it was a fun learning experience.
I was able to re-use a character from another short I'm working on which helped a lot, though I had to build him a new rig, but it went fairly quickly.
Took me probably around 80 hrs from start to finish. Looking forward to doing another on in the future :)
