View Full Version : Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition 6GB or workstation card

I'm building my new workstation computer and would like to know if I should get the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition 6GB edition or a workstation card.
Im using after effects, maya, untiy and zbrush.
now would any of my programs use the 6gb with that card. like with maya.
Or would I get better performance with a $600.00 workstation card with like 2gb on the card
Any suggestions or opinions are welcome.

Check reviews with people with that AMD card, check OpenGL Cinebench benchmark values.

You'll need that RAM if you are thinking to use some GPU rendering that uses OpenCL otherwise it is probably not relevant.
I always used gaming cards - not in Maya, but i remember 10 years ago Maya worked okay with geforces1 -and have had no big issues.

I have a 7950 and it's really slow in viewport 1 but fast in viewport 2 in Windows but fast in both in CentOS but wakes to a garbled screen. YMMV

I don't know if it's been fixed, but my 7950 would not open multiple instances of maya in Windows 7. Well, it'd open a 2nd copy, but it wouldn't display anything in that instance's viewport...

ya, I'm beginning to understand why CG people think it's bad that Macs ship with AMD cards. The drivers may be faster in Linux and Windows but they are not nearly as stable as in OS X. That's the plus side to Apple's one-size-fits-all OpenGL approach. The down side is obvious - we're still stuck on GL 3.2...

I choose the w5000 hopefully it was the right choice I saw better reviews with the w5000 and it was alot cheaper than the 7970 6gb version
