View Full Version : Skygeneration Software
o2car 12-11-2003, 01:52 PM Im pulling my hair...
Do you guys know what´s the best software for generating skytextures on the market? (for use on a SkyDome - terragen does not do the trick)
The skies need to have a realistic look. S.T.A.L.K.E.R seems to use a good system for it. Do you know what software they´ve used or if its panoramic photographs?
Bottomline: Whats the best skygenerating software around?
Take Care,
O

In the past, I have used the Four Seasons Plug-in for Adobe Photoshop. It generates all kinds of cool skys and on top of it, it allows you to make a 360 panorama. Thats just one choice... good luck
Well you know to use a skydome... so why not just use the skydome textures too?

Terragen does do the trick you must use terragen or bryce to take 6 pictures of youre sky (front back left right up down) and insert them into a program like panoramica or something(its a discontinued dead software but i downloaded it somewere) you can also use bryce. Bryce and Terragen both give stunning results. The output is then mapped on a sphere. Another program is sky paint but I dont like it at all.

Stalker looks like it uses photos.
Here are some freebie sky panoramas... the stuff on the web is all free, the guy makes money off higher-res files.

If you want 3d, Dreamscape does a nice job.

I've also seen nice clouds from Lightwave.

Not these pictures specifically, but I saw some really nice animated clouds from LW.

Terragen and bryce can also look like photos. If done correctly it would be hard to tell the difference.

Hmmm. I've never seen either create photo-real skies. Pretty, yes... real, not quite. The clouds I've seen from these tend to look pretty flat and fractal. Can you point me to any examples? I must be missing the good pics.
I would agree with posm. Terragen stuff on here has been really nice, but usually 2 or 3 posts in someone will always tell that it's terragen.
For some reason it has that 'look'. Hard to explain.
