Hi this is my first post here (so forgive me if things go wrong). Been wanting to for a while but this is the first thing that's been made public. For Privateer Press "Warmachine" miniatures game.
done in Photoshop 7 the original design was done by Matt Wilson

nice one!
Love the illumination from the snow.
Maybe the axe seems a bit flat and lack of highlights, thats it.

yeh that axe really bugs me, try as I might I can't get it to sit right, i think Ive rendered it as if it's flat as opposed to in perspective

I hate to be a fanboy but  That is simply awesome...illumination from the bright snow, fire on his back lighting up the smoke, the nice glow from his face...all awesome details that add so much to the believability of the piece. Nice. :buttrock:

awesome pic, the only crit i would have is to maybe take some time on the snow to give it a little detail, great job

thanks for the nice comments guys :)

yeh the snow detail, I did have it rendered more but I felt it made the mech float a little too much and that overexposed white helped anchor the bottom of the piece, made the composition nice and simple.

The axe is bugging me enough now I think i'll go in and change it.

Wow, I really like this one a lot. It's so simple, yet the colours you've chosen are so striking - the image is really eye-catching. The axe does look a bit strange, but the rest of it is really really cool :)

Front page for you - I'm sure a lot of other people will enjoy this one.

Amazing image. I think the smoke is a bit too dark and the background lacks definition. Other than that, great composition, My first thought was that it was Warmachine from marvel comics.
Great work

This is an awesome awesome robot. While your on the axe, give it more colors.. maybe some copperishness in the middle joint?

Looks pretty good, although from a design point of view I think the axe is a little small . It looks like he could do more damage with his bare hands.
Otherwise very cool design. I like the thick smoke coming out of the exhauts.

Awesome scene...I really like the style and the overall 'ambience' or lighting, etc. The 'bot/armor design rocks!!! :buttrock:

It might be nice to see more snow churned up behind him, more chunks and powder thrown up in his wake...not just his current footstep but the ones behind him. Might add even more action and energy to an already great image.

I kinda agree about the smoke being too dark too, for that outdoor snow scene I'd think the bright reflected light everywhere would wash out pure blacks...? Just another tiddly piddly thing. ;)

Great stuff...

Really great, but I think the axe is a bit behind the rest of the picture, quality-wise. It doesn't look too much like metal, more like some kind of stone or clay, IMHO.

Can't do anything half as good as half as good as that, but you can, so I thought I'd give you my crit.

Frigging cool.

Funny enough, I was just over at Matt's house for dinner the other night.

Excellent work there. The pose and setting is awesome. The way the highlight on his right 'thigh' is terminated by the shadow, just before it flares out - genius.

Get it submitted for Expose'2

Very nice. He has such presence. The angles are great. The only thing I don't like about it is that it is 2D, because he would make a fine subject for an animation.

This is really good, oldstylish concept - although, I would try to improve this smoke behind a bot - because it is awfully flat! - also maybe try to add snow on robot's body parts - he seems to be perfectly clean, even if there is a snow on his feets.

Nice sense of weight and motion. It makes me want to see what other action is happening just outside the frame of the image. Reminds me of old Marc Silvestri's Cyberforce comics.

nah chippy, the axe looks good, it just needs to be spun 30 deg CCW, as he looks like more of a swinger than an overhead chopper.

great piece of work chippy ;)

Y'know... I've seen some amazingly awesome pictures on this site... but this just sparks something different. It's very well done, including the snow.

I try to see the snow as just a white, empty area of the paper to look at some details of the rest of the picture, but you've created an illusion that there is something there. I like that !

imphead

I think I may have figured out what's been giving you the pip with that axe...

The handle is coming out towards us, the viewer. This can be readily interpreted by the use of many stacked elipses to represent the foreshortening. The axe blade however is NOT rendered in any sort of perspective, i.e. straight on, thus making an odd optical connundrum.

To fix this I would recommend taking the top two points of the axe blade and moving them out from the handle and maybe even doing the opposite for points at the bottom, thus creating the sense that the axe is receding in space.

The same holds true for the brackets holding the blades.

That should about do it.

very nice work man,
I thought it was a 3D model at first. I would love to see more of the characters involved, and/or see them modeled in 3D!!

jadedchron
12-12-2003, 09:11 PM
I couldn't tell wth it was at first - other than a mech. If he had a HUGE ax as opposed to that small one, dragging on the snow behind him w/some pieces of cloth wrapped around the handle and a couple strands blowing in the wind I think it'd totally perfect the picture

chippy
12-12-2003, 09:27 PM
imphead: bingo that's whats been bugging me, cheers. I think that's also why ive been reluctant to properly highlight it because it isn't sitting "in the world" so to speak.

pinionist: putting snow on him I think would just finish the piece nicely, if I have some time after fixing the axe i'll try that.

Kenshin : i'd love to have the time to make one of these guys in 3D, texturing him would be a blast.

don't lissen to any critic about it, the snow is perfect like that doesn't need any additional details, everything is working, just don't touch it!! its awsome!!!

Awesome work for an awesome game! I just it and some other stuff at the ik warmachine site. (for those interested go ikwarmachine (http://www.ikwarmachine.com/) and escalation (http://www.ikwarmachine.com/escalation_pr.html) .)

Will you be doing more stuff for Khador? Other factions? Just this?

I didn't think I could like something other than Matt's work on Warmachine, but you tore it up!

isome: I'm doing a few pieces for escalation, and ive been doing a series of advertising prints for them. So far Ive done Cygnar for the IndyGencon prog. and Cryx for the Socal prog. Ive done on e more Khador piece but that hasn't been released yet. They have a great product there, I love the miniatures.
