how to select a parent object without the child objects?

The child objects are parented to the transform node of the parent object. So moving the parent without moving the children isn't easily doable, if I'm not mistaken.

You can select the Shape node of the parent which will not highlight the children. In the Attribute Editor of the parent click the Shapenode tab and click select button at the bottom.
