you mind giving us a poly count and a wireframe shot?

and what did you model her with...what software/technique..i mean?

spyder79
06-16-2002, 05:48 AM
poly count is around 16k ... i can't give a wireframe shot til monday.. i dont have the file at home.. so if this thread is still goin by then i'll be sure and post one. It was modeled with polygon's in Maya.. The technique used is basically spliting poly's by hand and using artisan to help with the smoothing..

Very impressive.

Her fingers look a little stumpy (could be the curve of the fingers) but I don't think most people will be looking at her hands. ;)

did you like maya's poly tools ;)

Very impressive work. But as another mentioned, it's considered a little offensive in this day and age to confuse cultural terms. I assume like everyone else that you don't mean she is from India, therefore she is not Indian. First Nations, Native American, or even her tribe name would all be more appropriate.

"it's considered a little offensive in this day and age"

Have you SEEN Outlaw Golf? I don't think they're worried about being offensive.

Besides, now they can go for the obvious Indian Outlaw joke.

Thats the best low poly game character i've seen for a long time.
Its even difficult to see that she is low poly.
Needless to say, it would be hard to play against her and keep your eyes on the right ball!

sorry if i affended any of you with the indian name.. she is native american.. not indian from india .. indianchic is just the working title on her.. her name in the game is Shawnee.. there is no bump mapping on her..everything is either painted or modeled into the character.. we aren't sure yet if we are going to use bump mapping on the characters yet.. we are still doing tests with that..

Yinako- this is the in game model :) and i love maya's polygon tools.. my main tools are artisan and poly split.. thats all i really use...every once in a while i use some others but not too often..

GRMac-- yes i work for hypnotix.. and we are strickly a maya house..

To all who want to see a wireframe.. i will be sure to post one on monday for all of you..dont worry. if you want you can check out Hypnotix's web site that has a few more pics of her and some other characters.. some are being retouched after setting the bar with this girl :) I also should have my web site up soon that will have characters on there as well.. i'll post that when its up..I'm going to try my hardest to make all the characters just as good as this... if not better.. I'll post here some of the other hot chics when they get made if you guys would like. I'm glad everyone is liking her :) I'm tryin my hardest to kick Dead or alive's *** with thier upcoming volleyball game.. I'm hoping people will finally stop looking at them as the hottest girls and maybe start lookin our way :) If i missed anyone's questions i'm sorry, i'll post more lata..right now gotta enjoy fathers day :)

Are you the sole character modeler for this game? Is this a daunting task? How many texture layers will the character models use in-game?

Thanks again.

SPruss
06-16-2002, 06:54 PM
Only critique is her fingers being to short! ..otherwise I think she looks awesome! But isn't 16k poly count a bit much for a realtime character? But maybe the environment is kept simple?

alphatron
06-16-2002, 07:01 PM
16k is fine for this generation of consoles in enclosed arena/small # of character games. DOA3's fighters had roughly the same amount of polys.. but because it only needed to draw a max of two at once on the elborate stages, and dumbed down the stages where you played tag team.

A game like Ratchet and Clank for the Playstation 2 draws roughly 300, 000 polygons a frame.. very impressive.

Merlin

WOW! Really amazing stuff, man, can't wait for the game to come out. How may poly's is she?

spyder79
06-16-2002, 07:18 PM
alphatron is right.. 16k is not terrible for todays games.. i actually heard dead or alives characters were around 20k... and the reason being is cause the environments are somewhat simple.. we are in pretty much the same situation.. especially now that dead or alive announced thier version of volleyball.. we need to compete with them so bumping up the poly's on characters is essential. alphatron... i'm not the sole character modeler now.. we have 2 people currently working on characters but I am the lead.. we are also in the process of hiring more character modelers since we have a couple more projects in the works.. so if any of you need a job feel free to apply :) but yes..it is a daunting task.... our other character modeler is new and i have to help him as much as possible to get to the same quality level.. I also think it is hard just to reach dead or alive's level myself.. or even to surpase it.. its definetly not an easy task.. however, i love making models and love a challenge.. I plan on becoming one of the best one day :) I'm only 22 so i still have some time :) Stefan, I'll definetly look into the finger issue and fix it.. even though its not the most important part i'd like to get as much as i can as perfect as i can.. thanks for noticing. gotta go do the bbq thing now.. i'll reply more later

Hmmm. I have to say from what you're showing that the face is the best part of the model, though I don't see much Shawnee in her.

It looks like her shoulder deformation needs some loving. The biggest problem to me is the distance between navel and crotch looks short. The buttocks have the squarish look of a female bodybuilder on hormones, though that may be the desired look.

BTW, 16k is plenty of polys for a character with little clothing like this one. You could easily build a cage with not that much more density and use it for film. Hands are a bit small too, but that's been mentioned.

Nice job though. I hope to see more.

Hmm another game to add to my Xbox collection =).

Well, the two things I was going to mention have been said before so I'll just ring in and say hands and back of the shoulder arm connection at the back of the armpit. Other than that really awesome!

Flaviosen... i work at hypnotix.. the maps on her consist of two.. one 512 x 512 for the body and a 256 x 256 map for the face..

as far as the shoulder deformation goes....first off, it was a quick bind so i could get some pictures up.. i'll try and work on it as much as possible to get a little better deformation out of it.. second, unfortunetly this is a game model....that kind of limits me to using some of the fun stuff maya has to get better deformation.. the most i can do is a smooth bind and try to get the weights as good as possible.. we are also limited on the number of bones we can use which also makes some of the deformation tough to deal with.. either way it is a notable critique and i will try my best to fix it as best as possible.. thanks for noticing :) if anyone has some ideas on how to get better deformation please do tell... we are constantly struggling on getting things to look right with the limited amount of bones and features we can use for games..

I love the model

in addition to the tiny tweaks the other users have mentioned - how about you try to make her eyes a little more lifelike? that would make it perfect - some bigger pupils, i think, and two or more highlights in it (or just white dots) always seem to do the trick.

keep it up! and hey! it's monday - wireframe time......

hey Stungun.. i wish i could show you how small the area is for the eye texture on the 512 map :) unfortunetly it might be as real as it can get for an in game model...maybe a little white spec can be added as a touch up.. If we do any more promotions with her i'll be sure to bring it up and hopefully add it in.. as for the wireframe.. you'll have to wait til monday nite eastern time.. i have work in the morning and i can't really post it during the day..dont worry, you'll get it..just be patient :)

Your model looks nice. It has been said once or twice before, but the only thing I would change is the length of the hands. Your character's hand (palm and fingers) should be almost (4/5) as long as it's forarm.

It will look to big at first.

Then you can make them masculine of femine by making them slender or beefy. But they will always be about that long.

Here we go... it was just a matter of time before political correctess showed its ugly face.

To hell with political correctness!

If you get offended by the Indian term used in the post; well too damn bad.

I don't care who gets offended or not, If you worry about that every single day you'll go insane.

hey man, really nice work for an in-game model.

other than what's been said before, her ribcage looks a little too small and the way her buttcheeks abruptly end on the side looks wrong, i've never seen that even on really skinny girls.

other than that, rockin indeed, especially the highlights of the skin looks great for a 512*512 texture... can't wait til your site gets up to see more of your work.

thanks everyone for your comments and responses.. You guys definetly made me feel good :) for everyone who commented on the hands, I am in the middle of redoing the arms and hands for another model which will be placed on this afterwards.. thanks for the suggestions..Chief Bob..what you said definetly helped make things easier.. thankyou for that...

tobalno3- this is an upcoming xbox game called Outlaw Volleyball.. its not a side project. She will be animated in the game but not by me.. that gets passed along to the animators.

as for the wireframe.. as promised here it is.. it is a very big image so i'm posting a smaller version with a link to the larger one.. please keep in mind that the model is not meant to be viewed at such close distances.. the wireframe will probably show off alot of what you will never see in game.. thus things not needing to be modeled.. so please be kind :) hope you enjoy

Looks great! Very hires. The face definitely has some personality - wouldn't want to get rid of that! Can she change expressions ? Why is the eye included in the rest - shouldn't it have it's own texture ?

Any reason for hiding the toes? Will there be deformable sand as in VF4?

One thing to all of you (the dev team that is) Make it play as well as it looks! In other words: easy to pick up (yeah realize you just a modeler ;))

see you,

Farley13

PS Have you guys experimented with baking hires geomerty +shadows onto the low res ? (Next game of course - too far into this one)

spyder79
06-18-2002, 03:44 AM
l_farley13_l as of now she can't change expressions.. that is something that will be worked on in the future.. little too early for that now.. but trust me, it will be there :) the eyes are included in the body map to save texture space.. that is really the only reason.. remember that a consol is limited..and we need to be as careful as possible about how to use our resources.. the reason the toes are hidin in the render is simply this.. i rendered the shots at 1024 x 1024.. then i took 3 of them and placed them into one image that was 1280 x 960 and made it my background.. well.. i didn't feel like scaling the renders down.. i wanted to get the full quality of the render.. unfortunetlly it just didn't fit on the document size.. so its either i cut a little off on the head, or a little off on the toes, i chose the ladder.. feet aren't the best part anyway..especially since they will be in sand most of the time.. i figured people would rather see her body anyway :) as far as making it play as good as it looks...well.. i hope so :) and your right, i'm just the modeler... but i'll do what i can!
we haven't really experimented with baking high res geometry onto a low res version.. that might be something to think about.. we do plan on doing LOD's on the models.. how low the low is i can't say yet.. if its not that low it might not be worth it... but we will see.

Spyder79 ...
As said before ... very nice work. Truely a creation of the elite modellers in my oppinion. But (yea, sry - there has to be a but :P) since it's going to be used in a game you should always make it as simple as possible (look at the armpit section ... although the render looks superb you can still simplify it alot more and get the same result). I dont care how much CPU power you've got ... always clean up the models as much as possible ... i really hate when the models i get are "heavy" ... makes my job (engine programming) alot harder :) But again ... keep up the good work. Just try to clean it a little bit :)

Best Regards
// Daniel

spyder79
06-18-2002, 02:38 PM
texturing is done in deap paint and photoshop.. the model took me about 3 days to finish with some tweaking afterwards. we are taking our time with these models to try and make them look the best they can.. for source material.. i had a sketch of the character to get her ourfit down.. then i looked around online for a hot girl who fit somewhat the look and used her as reference for the face.. girls for me are too hard to model without some reference :) for the body.. i went by the drawing somewhat, but more or less just tried to make it as sexy as possible...

Ill- you are correct about the polys' being lower in certain areas.. however, we are planning on using LOD's for the characters.. on the lower models they will be significantly reduced from what they are now.. the high ones will probably stay as high for a couple reasons.. for close up reactions we want them to look as good as possible.. and, which i'm sure you know, the amount of polygons and where they are placed effects the real time lighting on the model.. so if there are not enough polygons or the polygon arrangement is not somewhat even, the light will effect it "wierdly" and could result in some awkward shading effects.. the model isn't in the game yet however..so we will see what happens when that comes..if it can be lowered i'm sure it will be..thanks for the suggestion...

Very nice. Although, I speak from experience when I say that with 16k polies, you could have gotten a much smoother looking model. I think the areas that need work are:

The fingers seem too short.

The crotch needs to be lowered, and the navel raised a tad

More geometry added to the shoulders and elbows, and less geometry somewhere else.

Either the upper arm is too short, or the forearm is too long. Maybe if you selected the verts at the elbow level and moved them a bit downwards.

Very nice game model. It's really amazing to see how in-game models are getting more and more dense. :) I think after highschool, I stopped buying games for the quality T&A, but for the quality of gameplay. Hehe

I think it's great that the poly count is games are clocking up to look this good! But to be hornest, I think she could be halfed in the amount of polys and look close to what you've got! ..and all those polys saved, could be used where it is often lacking in those sort of games, the backdrops!
Again, very beautyful model!

The model and the textures are realy nice. But i think there are many wasted polys in it which you never would see and could be better placed in other parts of the model. They also could be used to give the ingame sand some depth and not be so plane. With the half polycount the face wouldn't look much worse.

FALCON

Hey Rich,...
You said you used Maya's poly tools to create this woman. I know of several people that are modeling in Lightwave and then importing the model into Maya for all the other stuff (texturing, rigging, animating, etc). I am primarily a lightwave artist yet I have recently begun using Maya (mainly for animation) however, I have used it's poly tools and find them to be very limiting and cumbersome in comparison to Lightwave's modeler. Have you ever tried Lightwave?

Great model, by the way. Congrates.

thanks for all the reply's and crits.. i have taken them all into consideration and am in the process of fixing then now. i'm not sure when another picture will be able to be posted..i have a bunch of other models to complete and pose up prior.. first and foremost the new Summer model.. who will have the fixes mentioned here.. i'll be sure to post her and get your crits from that as well..

Stefan-... i agree that she could have been much less polygons and would have looked just as good.. but remember.. a big and major reason the polygons are dense is because we want the light to fall in a more realistic manner.. that is hard if there aren't enough polygons to fill area's in.. i'm sure there are some places i could have been more resourcefull.. i am still learning so i can't be expected to get it right just yet :) rest assure that the backgrounds will have plenty of polygons in them.. we want them to look as good as possible..

Carny- i agree...again... I still have a little learning to do with the correct placement of polygons.. As for the sand not being so "plane".. dont worry.. the game is going to have dinamic deforming sand.. the sand you saw is just a placeholder.. i believe the sand alone has around 50k polygons in it as of now... all with mounds of sand.. that isn't the final way we are going to do it..we are attempting a bunch of different methods.. dont worry though, we know it looks bad now :)

Falcon- I have never tried Lightwave before.. i've used 3dstudio max, softimage, xsi, and maya.. i prefer maya's modeling to the last 3.. i heard lightwave's modeler is extremely good.. however, i dont find myself limited in any way with maya's tools.. maybe its just the way i create things... i dont really use a huge variety of different tools... mainly 3.. split polygon... extrude... and merge vertices.. then i use artisan for smoothing sections... and i'll tell you.. if i didn't have artisan i would feel very limited... i think i'm spoiled with that tool :) but everyone models differently.. so who knows :)

I'm a game modeller/animator myself, but I've never done anything evne close to as high poly (pc game developer.)

It looks very nice, very realistic and admittedly she's looking quite hot =] I do have some crits for you though. The poly distribution is pretty bad. I'm really sorry if this has been mentioned before, but reading through through 6 pages was a bit too much.

To illustrate, if you look at the legs vs the breasts, you'll see an abvious difference. The silhouette of the legs is quite blocky, and it's pretty much the only place it's really notisable aswell. The breasts have alot of polys that do not contribute to the smoothness of the silhouette at all. And the silhouette of course, is so much more important than 'surface smoothness'. Another area where this applies is the hair.

Other than that it's a greta mesh, very impressive. Godo looking mesh, I'm looking forward to starting on game meshes with such polycounts =] Good luck!

14k - that is alot of polys for a game model, so I hope your programmers can get several characters on screen at once and still get a good frame-rate on most PCs ;) I'd argue that you could still give the impression of good lighting on a lower poly character with (a) textures which take into account the environment that they will appear in and (b) good in-game lighting and shading.

yes, i am very comfy with maya :) .. I love that program. I have worked on the arms and fingers a little more.. we are still doing some tests with it so monday or tuesday I should have something new to show. a different character but hopefully better.. who knows, we will see how it turns out.

little5points- outlaw golf models ranged from about 6k to 10k.. highest being the summer and autumn models.
