Hi all. I'm going through that nightmare of choosing a new GPU (updating my faithful GTX 285).

In the crazy and non-conclusive research I have done I'm looking for opinions. Is there a benefit to buying say 2-3 GTX 480 vs 1x GTX 670/80? There are also some relatively cheap Quadro 4000s around at the moment too, as another option.

If I did just buy a single GPU I will likely keep my 285 installed for the secondary card with DaVinci Resolve.

I do mainly modelling and FX work in Maya with VRay, Mudbox, CS6 and Nuke.

Any thoughts appreciated.

The viewport rendering of most applications will not take advantage of SLI or CrossFire so having more than one GPU there is pointless. Some renderers can take advantage of more than one GPU (could be a big deal or irrelevant depending on your workflow). Given the choice I'd rather have one faster card than more than one slow card.

SLI will just give you more headaches with 3D apps.
