Hi,

I just purchased a copy of Maya Unlimited for the PC. I have been using Lightwave for years but have been bumping up against some of its limits and needed to see what the difference was for myself. My first question is: can Maya Artisan brush strokes derive from custom made objects with thier own surface attributes that respond to their local environment--i.e.---lights refelections ect. Can the strokes cast shadows, and if so will they work with volumetic lighting? Could artisan brush strokes substitute for an instancing system, especiall for grass, weeds and small background elements?

Second, if the answers to some or all of the above questions is yes, can Mental Ray render those elements without any "gotchas" that would prevent some render effects from working?

Last if there is any link to a list of things that work one way in Maya's built in renderer but not the same way in Mental Ray?

Lots of questions...I look forward to sharing examples of work and eventually answering questions myself.

I might need to go to engineering school to answer some of these questions ...

If you want to know if you can instance paintfx strokes to particles, then the answer is yes

One approach for something you described would be to make the surface live, then sketch some particles on the surface, delive the surface, make you paintfx which will be at the origin and instance them to the particles

with some random expression you can get nice results

mental ray always take s extra tweeking to get what you expect ... even if you derive everything from maya, you will need to setup mental ray spefic settings

I dont think shadows work on PFX because it is a post effect. Though there is an option to "convert pfx to polygon" which will allow shadows and vol shadows to work on them, with one major drawback: the scene will shoot up in polygount, especially with grass, to something unmanagable. I dont know about instancing, sorry.

PFX work with MR once converted to polygons only.

[edit] raytrace shadows dont work with PFX, but Dmap shadows will. (in maya standard)

Yes...PFX can cast shadows, and the PFX shadows settings are really great, just open you brush attribute and find the shadows settings (see attachment), lot of PFX shadows settings there..

Yes..you can use brush strokes for an instancing system.
