View Full Version : A big blue alien head
Britton 06-15-2002, 12:36 AM Hey folks,
I put this in the WIP section a little earlier, but since it's not really a wip at this stage I thought I might as well move it to here.
It's modelled in max 4.2, rendered in brazil. I'm currently working on a body, but it means I'm gonna have to completely throw out the maps I've made so far cuz the UV coords are going to end up completely different. (I was never completely happy with the textures anyway)
Also, here's a quick anim I threw together (http://members.rogers.com/britton.plewes/alienanim.avi) to test out how the eyes blink.

THIS ALIEN LOOKS ALMOST EXACTLY LIKE MY ALIEN. That's okey though, yours is a bit different, and the texturing is totally different. I like the eyes, kinda like mine but made a bit better. I'd love to see the rest of the body. Good work, keep it up.

Can you post a wireframe? I really like the area around the tear ducts and the thing inbetween the lips and nose (can't remember what it's called).

Hey guys,
Thanks for the comments. XTitan, can we see some other views of yours, I'd love to see how similar they ended up. From what I can tell though yeah, they do look pretty similar.
Here's a couple wireframe shots, one of the whole face and another closing in on the requested eye/mouth section. Plus, here's some shots of his new body. I'm not really that happy with the design of the feet, and the torso definitely needs work, so any ideas on how to spice these up are totally welcome

Love the animation, great character too!!
I'd make the body a little fatter, just to complement the character, but that's up to you.
I hope there are more animations coming up.

Cool character. The eyes are very cool. I did notice something in the animation....over his right eye, there seems to be some clipping when his eye lid is up. Maybe the codec though.
Keep up the good work

sorry, no update this time. I'm currently fiddling with rigging, seeing how much I can coax out of max's skin modifier...
Joril: Yeah, the whole time I was making him I was sorta going for that skinny arm, pudgy belly type look, but for some reason every character I ever make ends up ripped. I'm trying now to soften him up a bit, first step: a nice beer belly.
Rogue: I see what you mean, and yeah the mesh is clipping not the codec. Actually, if you look at the whole right eye, it looks like the inner, "white" part of the eye is clipping through the outer, "cornea" part. For some reason this only happens when I've got the camera far away, when I'm zoomed in the problem goes away. Any max users know what this problem is? I've seen it happen in the past but it was never quite this obvious.
Thanks for all the comments guys. I'm feeling courageous, so I might get to tackling those uv coordinates soon!
Britton your alien si a fake!!!!

Omg, I'd forgotten how lousy those music videos were! Had I realised how similar the designs were I would never have started in the first place!
...time to go burn my HD

Britton, I would suggest you give it a female body, considering the face looks very feminine IMO. I'd like to see it with a curvaceous feminine physique, with a LOT of round curves. I just think it would go better with the design of the head. Let us see the final result.

Heh, yeah. And perhaps a nice model of captain kirk to hit on her.
I've never modelled a female before, this could be interesting. I'll give it a go...

really nice alien, Britton, I like it. Very clean modelling.
but, if he's an alien, he soulndn't have human nose, mouth and body, dont you think? :curious:
great job

great job!! Looks funny and sweet at the same time. Forget the similarity to the friggin Eiffel 55 or whatever!! Your character looks cool, and that is that. Btw, only crit I have is that the feet are a bit too small. I mean, i see everybody making small feet, why? I mean, big feet are really cool, and they give an incredible sense of balance and versatability to the character!

Looks great - for the torso- you might make it a bit wider and give 'em a pudgy tummy - I think his face gives him a great juvanile look, why not spread it to the body? He's getting pants too right ;) The feets might just be a bit wider, and fatter toes so the toes are closer together - anything too alien just feels weird (plus would not be too stable).
see you,

Hey guys, quick update...
I pudgied him up, taking farley's advice in trying to make the childish look of his face match the body (it's subtle, but definitely different). I've decided to go with a him, the thought of attaching a female body to that head is kinda creepy. Here's also a shot of the feet, which I'm not too happy with design wise. Does anybody have any ideas as to how I could spice 'em up a bit?
Frinsklen - I agree, he does look way too human. It seems everything I model ends up looking humanoid for some reason... guess I need to stop taking anatomy so seriously. I kinda like it like this though...
diazgl - don't worry, I was only joking about the eiffel 65 thing. Truth is i don't think they look that alike and the quality of animation in those videos was so bad in places I really don't think it's worth sweating.
Farley: yeah he's getting pants... actually he might end up getting a complete flight suit or something in the future, I just felt like modeling some musculature.
okay, now the pics!

what's wrong with humanoids? I like humanoids. And i dont think he looks like a child, he more looks like smart and sweet. Only thing I really dont like are his feet. They look really strange, like he can't really rely on his feet to walk...And the nails on the feet blend all weird with the skin.

Britton, cool stuff :)
And XTitan, ur character doesnt look anything like Britton's, apart from the fact they are both small and blue-like in color.

Guys honestly now...has anyone really seen an alien? How do we know they dont look humanoidish. Let the man keep his steelo. :buttrock:
Britton

Don't worry I'm not gonna touch the humanoid look. I was going for the typical 'close encounters' type alien, so the fact that it has two arms, two legs and a torso between them was completely intentional. I think I made the musculature a bit too human but I kinda like it like this, so it stays.
Not to start an argument or anything, but I do think it's extremely unlikely that any aliens would bear much resemblance to us. The way we appear is by complete fluke, due to a series of millions of random mutations leading to our current appearance (well, at least according to darwin and his buddies). There's millions of different shapes possible in a creature, and if aliens DO exist (again, not to start an argument) I'll bet there's ones shaped in every possible way imaginable.
BUT, since I was going for a sort of humanoid look, I'm not going to take these shapes into consideration cuz I've basically landed on the design I was going for.
MDB101 - Cool animation! I did some lipsync tests about a year back with an earlier alien character that turned out pretty well. When I get home maybe I'll post some of them. Is the movement of the body motion capture? If not, nice animation job - it's really fluid.
...working on a skeleton now. Hopefully I'll have an animation test by the end of the day, we'll see.
Sure Britton but The Oldest Blu alien is a job of 1998.......
However the video that you have seen is one of the first 3d animated videoclip in italy......^_^

Hey guys,
here are a couple of old facial animations like I promised. The design is kinda old and overdone, which is why I canned it in favour of this new design.
Alien talking (1.9, divx3.11) (http://members.rogers.com/britton.plewes/alientalk.avi)
Alien singing (.5mb, divx 3.11) (http://members.rogers.com/britton.plewes/aliensing2.avi)
These were mostly just for practice, so the audio clips are just pulled from movies and old songs (see if you can tell which).
Done the skeleton on my new model, but it still needs to be skinned before I can try out any animation.
Pegasus: sorry, I don't really have a website right now. I've been meaning to make one but I'm just so damned lazy sometimes...

There seems to be something wrong with the "singing alien".
