MEETING: "Smithsonian Osteology Hall Draw-In"

For those of you who render creatures in the flesh, this is your opportunity to see first-hand what drives their structure. Come and sketch after-hours in the National Museum of Natural History's Hall of Bones, by special arrangement with the Smithsonian.

No crowds! Just you, your colleagues, and the museum's extensive collection in Vertebrate Zoology including fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.

Dr. Jim Mead, curator emeritus of the Museum (specialist in modern whales), and visiting marine fossil specialist Dr. Ewan Fordyce, from the University of Otaga, New Zealand, will be available to give a short presentation and answer questions before the group is released to the Hall for sketching.

You will see a wide variety of skeletons grouped by their evolutionary relationships, offering a comparative anatomy of vertebrates. No bones about it! Or rather, it's all about bones! All yours for the evening!

THINGS TO CONSIDER:
- Think about bringing any desired portable seating and drawing surface, as there will only be a carpeted floor in the Hall.

- To quote Mary Parrish: "It's also a great chance to do photography of skeletons, as it is an outstanding classic hall of comparative vertebrate anatomy. Many more specimens than text!"

- The Smithsonian Education & Outreach department will be videoing our Draw-In. No interviewing is expected, but they would like to video us drawing and maybe ask for some loans of sample to scan and add to the video.

- Food is not allowed in the Osteology hall.
