View Full Version : Bridge To Avalon, Max4ever (3D)
12-03-2003, 04:20 PM
ok, I think that's the final piece. Thanx again to the wip section for the support and crits.
details: A matte painting project, I made the landscape in terragen, reconstruction in max, added some 3d ellements, like the bridge, the trees, the grass( i made a tutorial for the grass and you can find it here GRASS TUTORIAL (http://dragos.tigros.ro/tutorial%20fantana/pagina6.htm) , sorry about the language, I didn't have time to translate it :( ) , the altar, the stones etc.
then in particle illusion i made some fog and some parts of the waterfall, composite them in photoshop so i can animate them later in after effetcs.
The forest in the background is made in photoshop.
Hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed making it.;)

Great job. Keep up the great work.
12-03-2003, 04:49 PM
Nice work. I think it could benefit from some darker tones in there, especially in the canyon area, as the depth is lost slightly. The mist/light effects I also feel take away slightly from the impact it could have with a bit more clarity. I'm sure it would hold up pretty well because there is a lot of detail in there. Overall great environment though, I'm just nit-picking.
the first time i'll meet you i'll buy u a beer
Wow, it turned out great, after watching the wip, i'm suprised at how quickly you finished this.

12-03-2003, 09:25 PM
here is the wire and the terrains I made in terragen wich I composited.
the signs are from alien fonts "Mike H. Lee's Kilrathi true type font: This Kilrathi font comes from 1999 Movie: Wing Commander."
Thanx to Azra for the tip, and misu for the morral support
The way you have rendered out three different coloured/textured terragen scenes with the same geometry so you can mix and match them in comp. seems such an obvious thing to do but until seeing that post of yours just now it's a technique that occured to me.
Thanks for posting.
12-04-2003, 01:29 AM
nice .,.....go on!
12-04-2003, 01:40 AM
Very Lord of the Rings in a MYSTy sorta way. Nice work!
That is the coolest thing I've ever seen, I wish I would be enlightened to the work involved in this.
12-04-2003, 03:40 AM
Good to see the progression from the WIP to this. Rock n roll.
12-04-2003, 03:51 AM
Bliz, the mixed textures could be done in terragen but i choosed to composite them in photoshop for a better control.
yangmiemie, I will go on, Weta is closer with every progression I make
Signal to Noise, I'm glad you like it but there is a long way to weta quality...
raft, maybe I'll do a tutorial soon...at least I hope so.(i have some on my webpage)
boboroshi, thnx for the support in the wip section, I apreciate it
again, thnx to the mods for the plug
12-04-2003, 04:27 AM
I love the lighting, I hope this wasn't already asked. Default scanline or was it a renderer that supports gi/high tech expensive stuff? If you defaulted it, I am very impressed :D Well... I am very impressed either way.
12-04-2003, 05:30 AM
Annuostivix, I use vray, always vray. It's my kind of rendering system.
12-04-2003, 06:46 AM
Truly amazing work. Good combination of 2D and 3D. I especially love the atmosphere...
12-04-2003, 07:35 AM
very cool composition! i hate to write a praise comment, though this is really eye catching, so i guess i can hand out a couple every now and then. lighting is very cool and i really like the grass texture.
just a quick question, cuz i'm trying to make some outside scenes, how long does it take to render out everything (and puter specs if you want)?
12-04-2003, 08:16 AM
very impressive .... :bounce:
12-04-2003, 08:39 AM
very nice max4ever :) , I would like to see this animated
12-04-2003, 08:54 AM

12-04-2003, 01:13 PM
perfect rendering, i like the colors very much. congrats
12-04-2003, 01:42 PM
Incredible. You've managed to nail the lighting and effects in the composition.
Once you've gotten some sleep, it'd be great to see that grass tut translated. I tried a translator site on it and pretty much got garbage :)
12-04-2003, 04:30 PM
Hi that is a beautiful render, and on the topic of grass, I recently downloaded a free grassmaker called Bantam3D grass(free), that has this great feature,...you feed it a black and white bmp, and that's where it grows your grass. So, if you wanted grass to sprout exACTly between your stones, you could just take an ortho shot of them from top view, go into photoshop or whatever, and make it a solid black and white image, and that's where it will sprout your grass. you can also control alot of other parameters with it.
12-04-2003, 05:11 PM
Damn! thats f***ing amzing!! very enjoyable to look at!
12-04-2003, 06:47 PM

Well done.
12-07-2003, 08:06 AM
the greens have too much yellow for the darkness of the sky. I'd suggest adding more blue to the green and add a slightly blue haze for the distant hills. you might be able to pull it off in post by just running it through photoshop, actually.
I might have also made the castle taller as well.
Edit: Ack! forgot to say all the good things I like about this piece. I like the greenery, how dense it is, that can be a hard thing to pull off in 3d. this is a very nice project. the depth of detail is rockin! *big thumbs up*
from an architectural standpoint, you have some serious problems with the bridges. they don't have enough curve for the stone to hold em up by themselves, and there is no bracing system for what is there now. basically, those bridges couldn't stand as they are built, but the rest of the pic is so nice, it's really only a minor note.
12-07-2003, 06:24 PM
Just a quick composition in after effects.
the quality is very low due to xvid compression...sorry :(
TEST ANIMATION (http://www.xmg.ro/mihai/cg/dragos/bridge_to_avalon02.avi)
Looks great, I like the movement of the mist and waterfall, although the waterfall might look better with more movement...to make it seem less static.
12-08-2003, 07:19 PM
it gives the environment something that little bit extra.
Maybe add some birds??
is the castle in the bg king arthurs?
12-08-2003, 07:31 PM
10x Troy, I'll accelerate the movement of the waterfall.
Manwich, I'll put some birds also, thnx.
"is the castle in the bg king arthurs?"
I dunno, but after this long trip, that should probabely be a HUGE bar!
What does 10x mean? you said it before but I didn't undertstand :)
12-08-2003, 08:59 PM
12-09-2003, 12:11 AM
The flock node in shake (from highend3d.com) is great fun for adding a few birds flying :)

12-11-2003, 12:29 AM
I have watching this piece from your first post. Every suggestion, neuance, tweek and modification was taken into consideration. You have taken it to a new level and should be proud of your results and accomplishments. Good Job!
12-11-2003, 03:26 PM
Mihai Pocorschi helped me translate in english the GRASS TUTORIAL (http://dragos.tigros.ro/tutorial%20fantana/grass.htm) . Thank you mate! ;)
10x boboroshi but i have some animation of birds done long ago.
charithmax I'm glad you like it.
LowJacK, indeed, that's the whole ideea of a forum...to help eachother with critics.

01-03-2004, 05:17 PM
Cool image ! To me the photoshopped blurry and hazy background stuff does not meet the quality of the forground elements. It looks somehow painted at another style or level of detail. But anyway - nice work that!
02-21-2005, 01:00 AM
02-21-2005, 10:48 AM
