Haha! This is great:

Most Anticipated Category

So what? They are giving an award for "developing" a game now. That's like having an award for movie trailers(which actually are better then the film sometimes).

Otherwise, sounds cool. Might be fun to watch.

games have a longer shelf life than movies or television.
games are repeat entertainment...so having a category for most anticipated is warranted, especially when you look at all of the nominees. some hot games coming out that the public is going to lose their minds playing...it should be interesting to see what comes out of these awards...

though I do think the best animation category is VERY particular with the nominees...there were some stellar games out there with brilliant animation that got overlooked, simply because of their genre... *sigh*

I agree, games are very different from other media, and that all of the "nominees" appear to be enticing and with proven track records behind them. Giving an award doesn't seem appropriate though. Something like E3 "Best of Show" or similar is a bit different, since the whole show is about what is to come.

As for longer shelf life. Well, perhaps for the immediate 1-6 months or 1 year. However, movies last in the theatres for a time, and then people buy the dvds 6 months later, extending the life. Most likely they are watched over and over. Many people I'm sure still watch old movies or reruns of Seinfeld, etc on TV. However, how many people are still playing the original Doom or Ultima game? In terms of hours spent in front of the media, I suppose games win out, but in the long run, movies and TV shows seem to last forever.

Anyway, I just don't think an Award Show should give an award for "Most Anticipated." There are plenty of games that are highly anticipated, but don't live up to snuff. And there are plenty that exceed expectations or sneak in under the radar.

On a side note for you wrestling fans, they will be showing 2 wrestling matches after 10pm sometime during the show. Chris Jericho vs Rey Misterio and Trish Stratus vs Victoria (bra & panites match). They show WWE Raw on Spike TV so I guess they are trying to attract the wrestling viewers to watch the awards.

* MADDEN NFL 2004 (EA Sports)
as GOTY?!?!?!?!?!?!?
A sports game as Game Of The Year? Please....

Madden is madden is madden is madden. 2000,2001,2002,2003, 200x: these games are not award winning games. That goes for all NBA and NHL games too. They come out yearly, and they update the names and stats, and add more polys. Boom, done!
There is no storyboarding, no plot lines, no creativity.
Argh, why would you even nominate that?

I've seen countless commercials promoting this on TV, and it sounds like it's run by total non-gamers. Christ, they got pornstars going to it.

Best Action Game
* MAX PAYNE 2: THE FALL OF MAX PAYNE (Rockstar Games)
* TRUE CRIME: STREETS OF LA (Activision)

These games both came out like just weeks ago. And they beat everything that came out since Jan. 2003? Another one i don't get...

One last point of confusion... GTA2 came out in 2002, so Spike isn't nominating just 2003 games?

Well Team Fortress 2 won "Best Action Game" and "Best Multiplayer Game" during E3 1999 and we all know how well that game turned out

.... 1999, that's gotta be a typo... oh wait... it's not. Must be coming out really soon.

its sad that they choose only a select few new games. They should of made it like the previous 3 years.

Sly cooper
ratchet and Clank series
Jak and Dax series
Rayman series
Metal Gear Solid 2, although this would probably win :D
to name a few ;)

Very few comments here... hmmm

Do you guys not take the SpikeTV gaming awards seriously? (which i imagine) Only a few hundred have even bothered clicking on here.

Also, does anyone know what they pulling in terms of ratings for this premier? Good enough to validate doing it again, or even interest other broadcasts to copy?

I certainly didn't take the show seriously. I think it was pretty obvious by the games that were nominated and a good number of games that won awards that this show was just a joke. Cmon Enter the Matrix for best game based on a movie are they serious? True Crimes Streets of L.A. beats out games like Max Payne 2 or Vice City for best action game I laughed out loud. Plus out of all the top ranked GBA games how in the world could Splinter Cell win? Yea I couldn't really take this show seriously.

How... did the wrestling game win best fighting game when Soul Caliber 2 won most addictive game? Hell, the fact that SC2 was even in the category guaranteed it an instant win... aside from the character creation, who even likes wrestling games?

Yuck! I watched about 5 min. of it and then changed channels. I know MTV owns Spike, but I really wasn't looking forward to another "Video of the Year Awards"...which I can't watch anymore either. Oh well, "MXC" still cracks me up.:scream:

I'm sure the development companies that had winners are taking these awards seriously. Other than that...

they really "tried" to hard with it. simple as that. i'm sure tons of 8-14 years olds loved it, and some of the winners didn't deserve it. WWE best fighting?

This show was so unbelievably lame that I couldn't believe they roped people like Ray Liotta into coming to it. I know he did the voice for Vice City, but I've seen him talking about it on talk shows before, and he has no idea what the game is even about. He just took his check and ran.

I thought that David Spade might add a little bit of watchability to the program, but I could only take so many "gamers don't get laid" jokes. Plus, he was only on stage for a few minutes. At one point I thought that maybe he had relized what show he was hosting and decided to leave, but then 30 minutes later he was back with more unfunny jokes.

It was quite obvious that the awards were based on hype and cleavage over playability and fun factor. Example: DOA beach vollyball for best animation and Enter the Matrix for best movie based game.

No wonder parents and politicians think video games are nothing more than pointless sex and violence.

Plus, they could have at least showed the nominees. I would have liked to have known if there were ANY decent games in the categories.

The only redeeming part of the show was the Pong Dot Tribute which was somewhat halfway amusing. I actually enjoyed it until they had to play the "Al Gore invented the internet" joke which just makes me want to scream and set fire to large buildings. Its obvious that the liberal antics of the show are just a clever front for the far right conservative media. He said he helped create what the internet is today. Which is true. He was the head of a commitee that funded millions of dollars to the military and private companies to research and develop the internet for widespread civilian use. Its true that the internet would not be one tenth of what it is today without the help of Al Gore. Yet the media twisted his words into "I invented the Internet." AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Serenity Now.....Serenity Now.....

Okay, I'm better. Sorry for the rant.

To sum it up: VGA's sucked.

C'mon, you have to admit that Snickers commercial that was running in 2000 was a riot ( you remember, the dude in the voting booth with the animated elephant and donkey tryint to persuade him.) The donkey kept mouthing off all the things he created. Great commercial.
