Here's a little experiment of mine, only one jpg is used for reflection environment, I've used the Rendertree to extract brighter parts, composited that over the original image with 5 times the brightness, using Add blendmore, thus making a real HDRImage out of it, FinalGathering used for some extra spice, took me a couple of days to model and an afternoon to light and render.

Seems that you and your mate (XSI Face) are truly mastering MR.
What is renderTree? Something inside XSI ? or is it the reflection Layer that you extract in post process.
And what is FinalGathering ?
I use Lightwave (as E.moezer), I quit Softimage at 3.8 version...

PS: I red your thread XSI Face, but might not understood everything.

Excellent work and interesting technique.

:)

Its not a post process, these images come straight out of XSI, I've only converted them to JPG ;)

The rendertree is the nodebased shadereditor in XSI, you can control the exact flow of events for each object or group of objects.

Look at the attached image, the node to the right is the output, thats the final material, to the left are image inputs, the orange node is a clip, containing source path to the actual image and lots of settings for it such as flip, brightness/saturation/gain/blur etc, with these settings I can extract the bright parts (sort of like levels in photoshop). This can also be done in the FXTree which is the integrated image compositor

You can see I got 2 sources, one is the original image, the other one has the effects so its basically the bright spots with the rest black, after that an intensity node which drives the brightness way outside the visible range and thus making it HDR (high dynamic range), then both are inserted in a mixer node, the two images are mixed with Additive blendmode, so the bright ares become even brighter. Internally in XSI this is handled as super-white, thats a color whiter than your monitor can display, however the effects it produce are still there, it lights the scene, it creates bright reflections in a realistic way, and I still have total control.

hey opac,

nice modeling there :)

the render and lighting definatly does justice on those closeup images, they look great!

the slightly further away images look a bit... well CG (duh) compared to the closer ones..

all good work though.

nifty render tree usage :P

Just to thank you for the kind answer to my question.

Got to leave right now, I'll ask you more a bit later if you don't mind.
Thanx again,

Facial.

VEEERRRY nice rendering, super realistic and good modeling there, i'm amazed over how u did the whole thing in that little time.
lets show them some more XSI magic now shall we....

I like it :) How long have you been using xsi for?

Since 1.5 came out, january 2001 or something, been using Softimage|3D prior to that since early 1999.

Opacity: The third image (closeup) is really amazing. You know what's funny? Many people think that great modeling and lightning is enough to make gooood images. I think that good camera does like 30% of overall feeling. And I must say that your cameras are one of the best.:bounce:

Erm, im very new to XSI myself....i have one slight comment, perhaps DOF will help the images up close. Not that they need it, they look great!

emmm....great XGI watch..I love MR.
what's different between MR in XGI and MR in MAYA?
i think they are using both MR Ver3.0. but so far...i didnt see any
extraordinary works from MAYA.
why?
maybe the most MAYA users like to use Renderman....

"XSI" with an S ;)

The huge difference is the way its implemented in maya, when you're rendering MR in maya you dont get to use subDivision surfaces, volume shaders, or any of the custom shaders out there. In XSI, MR is is not a plugin but integrated, it's the standard renderer, you have much more control there. Besides MR for maya and max is *very* expensive, but there's two licenses included in the price of XSI..

maya needs a plugin renderer since the one that comes with it seems pretty bad.. xsi doesnt! :wip: .. Softimage and Mental Images have been cooperating for ages

Very nice renders! I think if you want it to be more realistic tho- you need to dirty up the watch even more. Add grunge maps. Even more contrasting specular maps to break up the way light will bring it to a new level realism!

How did you do the watch face? It looks like a single texture! This must change! If you use a texture, bump map the numbers.

Do not rely on HDRI GI or fancy renderer effects for creating photo real CG! It is in the details!

I suppose its not visible from that angle but the numbers are more shiny than its background. ;)

since this was sort of a rendering excersize I'm going for that sort of realism as oppose to modelling realism

Thanx for your comments :)

Cool watch, i like the hdr render also. I think thats a hdri render.

one thing i dont like is the links are so thin and flat. Mabey thats how the watch is but it makes it look kinda cheap.
