View Full Version : Character scene: I NEED A MEDIC
AkaKico 12-03-2003, 01:50 AM Here is my first ever finished CG image. I've worked with 3D for a while, but never really finished anything. This is my first post in the finished works area of CGTALK. This scene uses characters I created based on the Starcraft universe. I've sat on this project for a month now, I'm pretty happy with it. I used Cinema 4D and photoshop.
The scene is a fallen Firebat (guy in the red suit) and the Medic who is trying to save him.
C&C of any kind are most welcome.

EDIT. I wasn't planning on working on this anymore. But I tonned down the snow and updated the pic so I could get some feedback on other things. Thanks. (fixed the hand too, reads better)

It looks good. Reminds me of the Firebat and Medic from Starcraft. (just read your post more closely, now I know why it reminds me of starcraft :) )
The only thing that looks off is I can't spot any bump mapping on the suits. That harsh lighting and the fact that they are dinged up should highlight some rough spots.
Looking at the posts below I actually like the confused/busy aspect of the image. It gives you the feeling that you often get while playing the game with stuff whizzing around all over the screen :)

I was afraid it was going to be too busy:cry: ...
I really want it to turn out well.

Edit... here's that injured fella on a better day, I've added more detail since this pic though.

Your image made me do something that I haven't done in a while but made me realize that I should more often which is squinting at the picture. If you squint, you will see there is too much contrast over the entire image, bloches of white everywhere. It's a good idea to group values and colors, for instance....the background can be very dark, even the falling snow can be a dark blue, while the medic can be overall white and the firebat can be a middle grey. This way you can creat groups and subgroups to organize a complex image. Looks like alot of work went into this and I hope your final image is more to your liking.

I updated the pic in the first post of the thread. I doubled the amount of snow, and made if not stand out as much so it's a bit quieter. I also moved the Firebats arm, I think it reads better. C&C please. I really want to make this good.

Nice piece, but I think you owe it to yourself to keep going with it till its something your really happy with.
I think if you get rid of the large shape to the left (it looks like a zippo lighter) that might help a bit. It's blocking the medic and disrupts the relationship between her and the firebat and create a sort of strange middleground between them. Keep the object in the scene, but just move it to the background or something.
I'd also add some fill lights to the firebat to lighten up those areas of contrast. The medic is quite contrasted too, but I think you can make the forms out a bit better on her than on the firebat.
Also, she doesn't seem to be looking at him which is a bit strange.
It's a bit strange also that they seem to placed on snow while in the middle of the image, but to the left, they seem to be on concrete. This is kind of confusing me. The snow works well, why not carry it thoughout the entire image?
Anyway, I really like what your heading towards with this. With a bit more work, I think it will really shine.

This looks quite promising. Indeed it now looks a bit cluttered but perhaps after adding some ambient light the shapes will become more evident than they are now. Nice idea to base your models on StarCraft, I loved the game....
