Okay, my first gallery posting, so be kind, okay? :)

I work as a scenic designer and do all of my presentations as 3D models, with as much "stage lighting" as can comfortably be included. This particular chain of images, designed for a production of CAROUSEL in Connecticut, are all built on a virtual model of the actual stage so that the director can see, as much as possible, how the set lays out in the space.

While designers are using 3D more and more, I can only think of a few who are pushing it as hard as this, and it's turned out to be a real lifesaver when it comes to anticipating storage problems, scenic changes, and the like.

Hope you enjoy. And comments are certainly welcome.

I like it. I saw 42nd street about 3 months ago (my first broadway show) and I was impressed with the lighting work. Did you try animating the scenes to show how they might work on stage?

Thanks, Darnel. Yep, if the producer/director wants it (and the budget will support it), I provide animations of the scene changes so timing can be worked out or the details of a particular effect can be studied before construction begins.

One of my favourite stories about this kind of presentation was during that for a musical revue being presented here in Calgary. It used a turntable, so I had done all these detailed animations that had shifting scenery, the turntable in motion, and the lighting changing as we went from scene to scene. The director looks at this stuff, then starts telling everyone in earshot I had ripped him off by stealing someone else's work -- turns out he thought he was looking at a movie of someone else's production, not a virtual presentation of his own.

Many profuse apologies ensued, but I always thought, damn, how cool if you can fake them out like that with this stuff. :)

LOL, that's a funny story. Sounds like you already have a lengendary story to tell in your future interviews when you blow up and make it big. Good luck with the remainder of your project. I'm sure it'll turn out well.

I really don't know too much about stage design.. but I'll still try to add my two cents.

It's great how you worked with circles!
Maybe you could do more with the lightning. Couldn't you light the scenery in different moods? Right now it's very blue (especially, at the first two it doesn't fit that well).. Maybe a RED/ Yellowish scene?

Well, with a show like Carousel, you're sorta stuck with circles as a motif. But I'm glad you like the treatement, thanks. :)

Insofar as colour and mood, it's not a red/yellow kind of show, TTTT. Most of the action takes place at night under open sky near the ocean, and even the very few daytime scenes aren't high energy moments. So the restricted colours came out of discussions with both the director and the costumer (remember, you're really only looking at half the play's design here because the costumes make their own visual statement). I was also afraid it might look a bit too restrictive, but it's apparently working pretty well, which is always good to hear.

But thank you again for commenting. Much appreciated.

Neat. Its cool to see what different stuff people are doing out there. Thanks for posting. I love the dreamy one with the stars and clouds. Can we see the turntable sets then?
