View Full Version : drawing textures tips/tuts wanted

I use 3dsmax to model/light my scenes. The next step where I need to improve is drawing textures for my 3d models.
This is the scene I am working on right now. As you can see the models really need some color/bumb/specular maps.
Since I'm not that good at drawing, I think using some free textures from the web and modifying them in Photoshop is the best way for me. There is alot of free texture links here:
Now... does anybody know of some tips/tricks/tutorials on the net for a newbie like me? I know practice is 90% of it, but I'm really stuck. I need some help getting a good start.

I am planning to put some "how to do textures" on my new site... The site s in Portuguese, cause i am from Brazil...But, i am searching a way to put an english version too...
I am using photoshop 5.5 to create textures...But guess that Fractal Painter 6, is far better than photoshop to CREATE, any texture. Photoshop has few good tools to do it... Is much more painfull to create such things only with photoshop. The better way is to use some real pics, of dirt places, mask, paint, burn, and edit then to archive your "texture" look, and to fit your models.
To do textures, i always render an orthogonal view of the object, and put this render as a background layer on Photoshop, ou Fractal Painter...So, you can do the texture fit exactly where you want.
I have a tutorial, wrote in english, about how to create a dirt texture like this :

u could experiment some texture combination with the material
editor. in the Max library / Metals/
there are good old rusty metal,starship textures.
try using the "blend mateiral" , combining two or more textures.
the method used by 3donline is a very good way to work.
i noted the structures are almost plane. it requires simple mapping gizmos like "box" or "face".
later, u can use photoshop to modify the textures found in the

I would love to see some tutorials from you, because that image you posted is very good.
I have asked this question about drawing textures in a few web board. Most of the time people post links to some free textures on the net. But that is not what I need. I have tons of them. I need help in understanding how to modify the textures inside a paint program so I can use them on my own 3d objects. Its not the 3dsmax part I need help with, its the painting part.

That picture is pure 3dsmax 4.2 scanline. 5-6 mins/frame on a 1333Mhz Tbird.... 428 omni lights. I was going to use the lightpanels as real light emitting objects. But the render time just went up where I could no long use it for an animation. Hope Brazil 1.0 will fix that :)

try finalrender (http://www.finalrender.com). It kicks ass and
it's fast like hell :)

I have tried Final Render... Don't like it. Yes Brazil is not that fast in its current build 0.2.26b. But Brazil is much more logical.
Brazil will be faster.

Maybe you should try video tutorials hosted on dvgarage (http://www.dvgarage.com) . There are a few tutorials talkign about textures (look at the parking lines on tarmac tutorial).
They're quite simple, explicit, and have a very good result.
note : you'll need to be a registered user on dvgarage.com, but try it ! it is good.

The best way to learn(for me) is to watch and copy. Recreate textures that you see and like. That way you will figure some tricks or common traits in good textures.

428 omni lights???are you nuts?!?
anyway, now that you have the basic textures, try making a blend/mix material .say you want the panels to be shiny metal, but you also want some very dirty/beaten up areas.the easiest way (controlable) is to assign another UVW mapping coordinates at another channel (2nd for example).and make a blend material with the 2 materials, using a bitmap for the blend amount.you later paint that bitmap in photoshop and youre ready!!
later you'll have to be able to do the same for complex models, not that planar...and that's the real fun.
go to www.neilblevins.com and take a look at his tutorials.in the very beginning there are some material tutorials that really are helpful.

id also recommend you check out www.3dpalette.org tutorials, but they're merging with another site (gfx artist or something) so we'll have to wait to see what they both have.

Just trying to simulate the lightpanels. Real objectlights would be nice, but they take a lot longer to render.
