View Full Version : growing down...
ivanp 06-14-2002, 10:08 AM Hi!
Just finished an animation... initially inspired by one of my fellow students that did a growing tatoo.
... and it contains absolutely no attempts at doing photoreal humans or character animation whatsoever :)...
still interested? Then click on the link below. It's 15meg and intel indeo5.11. If there's any problems please let me know. Any comments / crit is very welcome.

Small, 5meg version, same codec:

Now don't be shy... the 3dbuzzers had a lot on it :)

Interesting effect. I don't...know what to comment on, it's a bit of a weird anim so..
Anyways, really, it's an interesting effect, how was it done? There's a fairly nice depth to the individual "branches" that made me ponder if it's "just" a straight ol' animated bitmap.

That was pretty cool.
yeh, howd u do it.
just a couple of things, the hand has like a grey border around it at the start... dont know if it was intentional, it would look better without it.
the stringy things and the way their colour fades is cool. It would look more real with shadows casting onto the hand though.
Overall i liked it! :bounce:

The branches is procedurally animated +textured extrusion. So to answer your question No, its' not an animated bitmap, it's happening at geometry level. The same goes for the cooling effect, which is a shader animated according to the extrusion length.

Phyle: nope - the grey borders was not intentional it was due to some problems with the bluescreening/camera out of focus in shake. Will fix it.
Funny you mention it with the dropshadow on the hand, because it's actually there, just *very* subtle. And not in the beginning of the grow. Because of the fact that the matal is glowing white hot i imagined that the amout of light emitted from the tip of the metal would wash out the dropshadow, but i could make the shadow harder as the branches cool off? (geesh... guess im getting a bit too much into it here :) )
Cheers for the comments.

Lol, the hell, I hadn't even noticed the hand wasn't pure CGI. I just assumed it was a nice-looking hand :)

gaggle: hehe - unfortunately my modeling/texturing skills isn't THAT good. Btw, here's a breakdown of the elements:
Rendered elements(XSI): Wall, device, rotating parts, growing geometry (color+fake alpha), displacement map for the light+dropshadow of the hand on the device, specular pass for the fingers.
Live footage elements: The hand.
Composited elements(Shake): All the animating lights + reflections, dropshadow from hand+from growing geometry on hand, all glows+particle-lookalike effects. And a lot of color correction to integrate the live elemets with the cg.
---
Stuff to improve: Proper translucency pass for the lighting interacting with the hand. All of the animating light things... a lot of them is a bit too 'hacked' togethger for my taste. One or two more shots - I modelled an entire hand doing the grow, but you can only see the fingers. More mechanic, moving parts to anticipate the effect. And sound! More inputs will be greatly appreciated.
