I feel kind of silly replying to myself. But I wanted to give everyone a chance to know how I'm going to be building this scene.
My outline for completion.
1. Following the guidelines of this contest, I'll post milestones of each stage of my work.
2. Beginning in Zbrush, I will create most of the geometry within here. Look for these pics to be the first ones up on the net, soon.
3. I will determine certain LOD objects for this project, and I will begin placing them in a scene in Maya.
4. After I get the geometry sorted out. I will begin the texturing and lighting process.
5. I'll post pics of different stages of the texturing, from Maya and Zbrush.
6. At this time I will determine the final lighting, and or light sources, glows, aurora's etc... to match the color scheme from my color sketch.
7. After I get close to the final stages of for the final render, I'll determine what I will need to do in post. Hopefully I won't have to do anything... *fingers crossed*
I think I've got a pretty good workflow developed between Maya and Zbrush. I want to plan out more for the texturing than what I usually do, so look for that progress as well. If anyone is curious as to how I work between Maya and Zbrush, I will post a link to a project that I did to test out what I can, and can't do with these programs.

You are standing on some unknown alien setting. This location seems to be whispering to you, you have a feeling that something was created here; maybe even the land itself is alive. The location seems unpopulated, but not necessarily abandoned or neglected, nor rusting or decaying, but life forms are inexistent. The location where you stand seems to be moving and it is difficult to comprehend its function or intent. The surfaces and materials that surround you are nothing like you have ever seen before. The design and layout of the location defies logic or the laws of physics, though only slightly, it seems that reality here is somewhat obscure. You feel a sense of grandness and awe, your breath is coming in short tight gasps from witnessing this alien phenomenon as it starts to overwhelm you. You cry out, "Is anyone there?"
I hate to disagree with you, but no where do I get that this has to be a scary location. It can be, but that is open for interpretation by the artist.
"You feel a sense of grandness and awe, your breath is coming in short tight gasps from witnessing this alien phenomenon as it starts to overwhelm you."
This sentence to me means that the landscape is beautiful, awe inspiring, and so much so that it takes your breath away. To me this doesn't mean scary at all.
Thanks for the complements though. :D

chadtheartist: I agree with your interpretation. There is no need for a scary environment.

I'd like to see a more crystal-like environment. So I made this to see how it would look for future study. Hopefully it will bring out the more alien part of the environment.

Here is what will be displayed in the background. If all goes as planned, you probably won't see much of this in the final pic. Depends on how much atmospheric perspective I will use.

EDIT:
Not my fault this is displayed twice! Cgtalk was backing up when I was uploading this, and I didn't know it went through until CGtalk was back online. I don't know if I should delete this or not, so if the Mods can remove the double post, I'd appreciate it.
Sorry.

This is an example of the grayscale map I used to make my background geometry.
Oh, yeah. SO far everything is modeled is modeled in Zbrush.

I think this will be the part of my environment that will look like something has been here before. I like the structure of it, especially since you don't see many spherical mountains anywhere in our natural environment.

I accidentally made this, and I like how it turned out. It's given me an idea to add more depth to the final scene, so I think I'll venture from the initial concept just a hair.

It's all Zbrush so far. When I get everything together in Maya, I'll post some screenshots of that too. Right now though, I'm building little things that I would like to put into the environment. Then I'll export everything, and start putting the scene together in Maya. Then on to textures, and lighting.

interesting models so far.
it looks as if we are viewing a single hair through a 300X microscope.

You have some really interesting structures here, it seems that zbrush is a pretty nice tool. Your models are very detailed which makes them look very real and organic, but still weird which is very good :)
Great work. Im really waiting for to see what you are cooking up here.

I wanted to see how all these different land masses would look together. So I did a quick layout in Zbrush, and I think it will look pretty good once I get finished with it.

Now that was pretty fast answer :)
That looks like one big healty plate of veggies, I see bananas, cabbage, raspberries and so on.. no seriously, it looks very interesting, lots of things to see. I really like those spiral structures too. Brilliant!
Interesting to see where you take this with materials.
ps. You made me hungry!

I was uploading the pic as you posted your message it seems. I like to think I'm fast... but that isn't the case here! LOL
Thanks for the compliments. I can assure you though that this won't look like fruit when it's done. Or maybe it will? :D

Ok. This is it. If anyone has any suggestions as to a different way to lay this things out, let me know. I'm really wanting to play with the different sizes of all these different things, and I like how this stuff is layed out now. I wanted to show that the little Raspberry things are actually huge, so I put one in the foreground to indicate it's size.
Anyway, here ya' go. Now on to texturing, pending any critiques.
Thanks

It didn't take me as long as I thought to get a theme for the textures going. Now that it's set, it will be pretty easy to start adding some spice to it. There are some bump maps on the foreground geometry. None on the background. When I start playing with the lighting, I'll add fog and depth of field.
Hopefully I'll finish this soon.
