I just started a few days ago... I'm not sure what I did.. but well.. I took a screen

I want a normal 4 polygon sided box. What do I do? Any object I make is now like that.. each thing divided diagonally.

Hiya.

Check your "Modifiers" stack (right side of the screen, 2nd 'tab'). See if you have one called "Tesselate". If you do, click on it and the properties should open up. You'll see two icons in the properties area somewhere...one is a Triangle and one is a Square. By default, MAX tesselates as triangles. Just click the 'square' one and things should look right again.

NOTE: When rendering, I believe that all objects are 'triangulated' in the end, by the rendering engine. The reason is a math thing (don't ask me why, I'm not a mathmatician). But for modeling and whatnot, quads ('squares') are easier to work with and generally provide better rendering if you throw a MeshSmooth on them.

Uhh.. no.. thats not it... none of the objects are tesselated.... any new object I create is like this.

make sure you have "display wireframe objects useing triangle strips" unchecked
it's there:
customize--preferences --viewports--display dirvers ,configure driver.
hope this help:)

You are getting your terminolgy mixed up. A cube has 12 polygons ---6 faces---8 vertices. 2 polygons make up a face which is what is being displayed in your screen grab. Your objects are not being tesselated. Its just a preference of how to view your geometry. I havent used Maya in a while so I dont know the hot key for it is.....which is probably what caused the problem in the first place...you accidently hit a key or something.
Follow -nurps- advice and happy modelling :bounce:

I'm afraid that didnt solve the problem... I disabled that option in the preferences and nothing happened.

Wait, I got it, I had to disable this option called "Wifreframe faces"
