I have a small dilemma. I need a new laptop that is reasonably priced that will allow me to animate with Maya 2012 and not be choppy or slow. I'm not to.concerned with rendering as I.can do.that with.my desktop. Does anyone have any suggestions?

"reasonably" priced is subjective

I was thinking anywhere from 500 to 1000

focus on CPU and vid card most. But that can be done if u shop sales. I got an hp for 499 after 2 rebates down from 699 and it can run Maya. Although not too complex

Between $500-$100 will get you a really good laptop. No need to spend more than $1000 unless you really want the very latest and fastest. I bought a new HP last year with these specs;
HP DV6 3032sa. AMD Phenom II dual core N620 (2.8GHz, 2MB L2 Cache) ATI HD5470 512MB Graphics card, 6GB memory, 320GB hard drive.
It cost about €600/$750 at the time and runs ZBrush, Max and Photoshop (often all open together) just fine. It also runs the educational version of Keyshot and renders out fast enough.
If I was to suggest anything it would be to buy a laptop with an LED screen as the battery life is way better than LCD. You should pick one up for well under $1000.

I realize you have a budget but you really shouldn't get a laptop with less than 12-16GB of RAM for 3D and less than 1GB of video memory. You'll be hitting virtual memory way too much with any less than 8GB
