ok i started workin on this, this is a test render with mental ray, notice the pixelated shadows, how do i go about fixing them?

Those are pretty odd, try adjusting your shadow sample rate on each light you have created. I would guess that would solve your problem based on the info provided.:beer:

where abouts is the samle rate for shadows? in the render options? or under the light setting on the modifier panel? i cant find it o.0

or under the light setting on the modifier panel When you select the light, below where the intensity setting is there are a bunch of rollouts. 1 of them is shadow map parameters and that is where you will find what you need.;)

What kind of shadows are you using? Raytraced? Shadow Map? Area shadows?

speaking of shadows, sometimes my shadows get misaligned, and it makes it look like my object is floating.
for example i once had a table on a plane and shone a spotlight infront of it. the shadow seems to start a short distance away from the table.
any reason why?

if your shadow is too far away from the object, you have to decrease the bias of the shadow (in the shadowrollout of the light). i usually set it down to zero, don't know why max doesn't do this by default...
