Speed Modelling 12 - 08-11-2012 to 08-18-2012

Speed Modelling 12

Welcome to the new speed modelling, this time we are doing it more simplified with a set time limit for each of the items. 5 new items out of a given theme, four are up to you what design you prefere, one of them includes a link, so we are modelling all the same and can talk about difficulties and how we solved them.
Try to finish each model in one hour, but feel also free to add extra time if needed. It's all about learning and improving.

Have fun!

Items - Theme: Boy's room

Toy (try to model your own favourite toy)
Video Game Console
Table with chairs
Basketball
Bed (as shown below)http://megashop.brotz.de/pub_res/produkte/xxl_417786aa6607928760878811492da954.jpg

Feel free to add items for a usable setting!

Nice, cool topic. :)

Thank you ^^

So I will start with the Basketball, since I modeled it already this morning.
Instead of just doing a bumpmap I decided to model the overall shape and I tried my hardest to keep it round. I got the texture from the interent and also applied it as a bump for the red parts.

Yes, thats why i decided to put that basketball in there.

As a maya user I first made out of a nurbs sphere the patches I needed, converted them to polygon with quads and tweeked the shape. actually the black part is another sphere.
- And I forgot to measure the time (as I did it just for me on the first hand)

Hm, you should model the bed i posted  but yours looks fine though ^^

And here the table and the chair for the boys room

My bad. I think I could have made it clearer - i edited the first post, so it should be clear now. Don't worry, you are free to model what you want - just trying to get something to discuss about if needed

The proportions are a bit off since we have to work of that image only, and i was too lazy to google for any other angles.. :D

but anyways, here goes the bed!

1hour (more like 1 hour and 7~8 minutes -__- )

Here is my version of the bed... I also needed a little bit over an hour!!! And it did't made too much fun either :hmm: but I think it is still usable for a simple setting

gamarala, that was actually a translucent material in cycles, the cloth there... cheating I know. :)

Good work there guys, see if I have time tomorrow for the bed too. Can't promise though....

Sundaynights, you wanna do next weeks theme too? You got some ideas?

Sundaynights

Got lots of ideas, yes. But might not have time to post something on Saturday - not sure about it.

By posting every week some items, did you run out of ideas? ^^ Should I PN you some?

------------

I just recognized that I missed some parts of the bed model! :argh:

so i decided to give this a go.

i have the basketball(i am aware that its yellow i just made a very quick material that looked orange until render :surprised)
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b59/bendstraw/basketBall.jpg

took a good amount of time past the hour. about an hour in a half because i had a very botch first attempt. where i tried a geosphere and extruding the needed lines but it presented a plethora of problems for me so i came up with a new solution and i think it looks alot better.

if anyone is interested(doubtfully) heres my first attempt, horrible i know.

ill catch up next week!

Hey BenDstraw,

very nice Basketball you got there!! How did you went about it the second time and how did you do it? Yours is rounder (and of that more accurate) on the top and bottom patches - i like that! But you missed a middle line (on the third glance noticed).
(I also had to smirk about your signature in relationship to your first attempt of your basketball - give it a thought ^^ )

And sure, put on the next speed modelling week!

@gramarala
Good luck with your assignments! See you next week.

I might do today the toy - I somehow wanna do some more organic stuff, so I am not sure if I want to go for the video game console.

hey thank you thats very encouraging to hear. the second attempt I took a sphere then made doughnut splines put them where i wanted them and shaped them alittle. extruded them so they became meshes then I did a subtraction boolean operation to get the basketball indents. sorry if this considered cheating I often use splines in my workflow. As for the middle line I did miss that. I feel silly because i used your basketball as my reference .

And sure, put on the next speed modelling week!
thanks is an honor. When do i post the thread 8/19?

I really had to laugh out loud because of your last sentence. My ball as a reference, its an honor! ^^ I never use boolean, so it is cheating ;) just joking. I really like your outcome. put on some texture and bumb like I did (and the missing line) in there and its gonna be perfect!

thanks is an honor. When do i post the thread 8/19?
I myself just went ahead and posted it ^^ - so it seems whom posted them every Saturday and made them run till Saturday. 8/18 - 8/25 will be it then. Now I am curious on your items and topic! Looking forward to Saturday!

Nice to see activity here again. :)

alright Ill make the 8/18 to 8/25 speed modelling thread on saturday.(Probably around 7am Pacific time)

Also I have an interesting idea, maybe the next thread after we get everyones submissions we comp all them together into one image with their name next to their model in the image. the comping can be done alittle more professionally(with alphas so they all fit into the same background) or just put all the images together as is. Because I realize not everyone has comping skills(I sure dont  ) or the time this idea can be abandoned I just thought It would be neat.

you mean everything together into a different thread? I won't mind though.

Here my favorit toy: Tigi! :buttrock:

Actually I wanted to simplify him and ended up with something in between, that doesn't really look right. At the End I also fighted with the render..., and he won.
I am really happy that I can hang out with the real Tigi and not the pale digital one. ;)

After one hour I just got the body and the main shape of the head done + the tail. I needed about 3 hours all together - i need to improve a lot and be faster!

Would love to see your toys!

I mean place them all in one image so like a collage. though we could put all the collages we come up with for each week into a different thread. hmm. anyone have thoughts on this?

Well you inspired me to make a toy as well.
anyways heres my toy(if you cant tell its Optimus prime, I owned several transformers toys as a kid  ) Took about 2 hours

nice toy! its ok to take time ^^ I spended the last several hours on editing UVs and texturing the snapshot. Both were firsts, so I am pretty proud of myself ^^
Here the outcomes (just the eyes are horrible)

I would do all in one thread and then in one post everything for one week (or even one post for each person each week). But I can't make collages XD

BenDstraw
08-17-2012, 05:30 PM
I can take the burden of the collages because it was my idea :scream:.

nice uv layout, only crit i have is I think you can simplify your uv clusters slightly. I'm sure your uv editing program has a weld feature. Though I'm no good at unwrapping myself so I don't really have a place evaluating yours :argh:

Sundaynights
08-17-2012, 08:45 PM
I am also a maya user. What weld feature? And what exactly does it do? ^^
I watched a video on digital tutors about laying out UVs and can't remember that they where talking about such a feature.
But actually in this particular case all seams are wanted like they are right now, because they are like the stitching of the parts tigi is made from. (did I say I wanted to simplify? XD)

--------------------

a few model I made here got reworked - should I give you the link to these models if you wanna collage them, or do you wanna take the bad ones? ^^
I like the idea, so someone coming here new has the opportunity to get a look of all works and what we do here at once. And there are quite a few good pictures with nice renders (like those from whom ^^ and the last weeks some others posted really good stuff)

I had barely enough time to try 3 different ones so here they are:

http://www.nadegraphics.com/Portfolio/Models/Kids%20Room/carbed.png

still some improvements I want to make, had a lot of fun, specially painting the texture for the Car Bed.
