Does the GI transmitter object have to be a polygon object or can it be just a null? Does making it a polygon object somehow change how the GI works depending on the object's size and orientation?

I doubt that a null can affectt gi since it has no "surface".

only polymeshes or surfaces can bounce photons.
nulls, implicts and other abstract objects can't get involved in the process.
