I've decided to learn scripting in Maya and was wondering what should I start with? I keep hearing Python is newer and widely used in other softwares also, while MEL will be phased out in a few years. (I'm guessing PyMEL and Python are the same?)

There seems to tons of good books on MEL written by industry pros available, while I don't see a book nearly as thorough for PythonMEL.

Do you all think I should start learning MEL first and then switch over to Python? or just go with Python.

If you had to recommend one book for either MEL and PythonMEL, which would it be?

thanks

In my opinion, Python is far better than mel, and mel is only being currently by those who don't know how to do it in python. I feel pymel is better than maya default cmds. Pymel vs Cmds is more a matter of preference.
