View Full Version : Environment Effects using MR in Maya

Hi Guys

I would like your help in determining which is the best way to produce enviornment effects like Fog ,Mist,atmospheric depth adding that cinematic feel to the shot.
I am inclined to use Mental ray for rendering.
So far I have tried Parti Fog of MR but it is slow and difficult to control.
I am thinking of using Fluid but don't know how it would work and is it fast with MR.
I am also open to any post effect too but would like the detail to come forward.

Also I would like to know can I use FG or Gi with all these effects.

For accuracy, parti_volume is the one you want. If you need accurate dust-rays of light to sync with your geometry and shading.

Fluids CAN work, but tend to not behave well with Final Gather. In Maya 2009 for example, FG would "break" if you inserted a fluid into the scene at all.

The best and most controllable way is to do fog effected in postwork. Render out a depth mask (z-depth) and/or an altitude mask, and then control your fog in your compositing apps.
