View Full Version : Texturing a WATCH.. help!!!!!!!

AAaahhh i'm STUCK.
Problem #1) Metalic feel. I cant get it right. i'm using a raytracing material in 3dmax, any pointers on a good reflective chrome material? i know its basic, but i need a really really good one.
Problem #2) The faceplate. I have an 85 dollar watch, and i don't feel like braking it and taking out the faceplate and scanning that sucker in. (Faceplate is the image inside the watch, under the arrows)

Well, regarding the metal look, here are a few tips:
- metal always has very fine scratches in it, from the machining process. Remember to add those in. They are very very fine though, so don't overdo it. I
- for reflection, get a nice HDR image or something, and make an environment out of it.
- knock up it's spec and reflection amounts to get the right chromey feel
- add a bloom effect (those really cool bright spots of light. It's a processing effect, and I'm not sure how you do it in Max, although I know you can)

Then, the faceplate - just paint it yourself! That pic you have there is a perfect reference! And I'm sure you can get a larger Fossil logo from somewhere, so that you can get the logo perfect. That face should be extremely simple to paint ;)

Thanks Leight, well i have taken your points and applied them. .. i think. Anyway-- this is the result i got. Hmm.. Any tips?

Kind of looks fake. Grrr... what should i improve on?
btw- i have 2 silver materials, 1 is on the spinner, its really reflective. The other is satin looking, its below the spinner and on some parts of chain.

Remember to put a Falloff map for the reflections set to fresnell and put an IOR of 20 ;)

Well, firstly, overall your reflections are too high. Take doen the overall values, as well as using Fresnel reflections (as Viper also suggested). This will give the correct angle reflections.
Also, your glass looks very ummm milky - try making it's base colour black, and takes it's diffuse to 0%.

I droped HDRI and placed it in a commercial enviroment (No reflections) just like in that reference photo. Anywho... i came up with somthing like this. I'm still working on caustics with the glass and faceplate.... grrr... brazil r/s is sloooww.

I changed the chain aswell.. oohh.. eehh.. sleepp.. eehh COFFEE!!!!!

I shuved that thing into photoshop, and added a little bit of ..well... originality. A sort of night vision look.

Well, actually, I think both look really cool :thumbsup: I think I personally prefer the very sterile, clean look of the first one, but that's just me :)
I think it turned out great! :applause:
Looking forward to seeing some caustics.

I think the crystal on top still looks a little too flat, mabye the highlights aren't sharp enough. I also have a Fossil and I notice that the "sidewall" the part leading down to the face from the rim of the watch catches some very nice glossy reflections. As for Brazil being slow, I wouldn't use DOF until you're very happy with the setup. :shrug: Just my thoughts. ;)
