View Full Version : Hypershade->Edit->Convert to File Texture->HUGE PROBLEM!
sketchguy 06-13-2002, 07:54 PM I've got a real frustrating problem here.
Trying to bake a 3d projection of a 2d map onto a football shaped NURBs surface. The shape is split into 2 halves, a top shell and a bottom shell. I've got my projection looking really nice, however, Hypershade->Edit->Convert to texture file gives me an unfaithful projection. The new map appears somewhat enlarged and distorted. Not cool at all. I'm attempting to attach an image to illustrate before and after.
Any ideas?

can we see the image ?? did you changed the UV Range in the Settings or something ??

before (was having problems posting this from the PC, let's see if I can attach it here on the Mac)

hui, looks a bit strange :)
so i can't say exactly what it is, but here are some tips for the converting. (btw : is there any need to convert ?)
first try to get an idea of what size the UV may be. means would it be quadratic or better rectangular a bit. then set the resolution high (i always do it with 2K). so here your possible size come to matter. if youre shape maybe more rectangular, let this flow into the size of the filetexture. otherwise always make it quadratic (2kx2k). you can resize the file later in PS.
it looks like it's an size issue in your case, but i'm not really sure.

The model will be bopping around and distort, so it does need to be converted. The stitching will be a mouth (you can see just the orifice opening for now) I'd really like to get the 3d projection converted because, for obvious reasons, the UV space as is will just warp the hell out of the leather texture.
The map's original size is fairly large - 2548 x 2505. I tried cropping it to a square and reapplying that before the conversion and still get the same warpage.
The odd this is I can get the projection to work just fine on a default sphere. I've only rebuilt this surface once and the UV space shouldn't be that wonky.
I'd like to finalize the outer shell w/texturing before I start animation, as the shells will be driven by a wire deformer located inside the mouth.

how about using a texture reference object ??

Not necessarily. You could make Texture Reference Objects of your models to preserve the projection.

Ooops. Sven beat me to it.

but i must say that i've heard about problems with that. don't ask me what kind of, never used it actually :hmm:

Nice suggestion to use Create Texure Reference.
I thought this would work for sure, but I get the same weird warping/distortion as Convert to Texture File gives!
I'm totally stumped here... : (

Well... my avatar was done with 100% Texture Reference objects.
I've used it about eight times and it's always worked for me. Generally, people have problems by not making the references at the bind pose or having some kind of influence on them. Reference objects need to remain still and in the proper position.

Here is what the file (after Convert to Texture) looks like inside Maya. As you can see, it APPEARS correct.

You can see the warpage created by the Convert to Texture command.

so it works out correctly now for you ????
aah now i guess i understand whats your problem. the filetexture is warped. but that's just normal and relies on your nurbsUV's that are stretched (it's ver hard to get them relaxed). so that's really just a normal thing in Nurbs Texturing.
or am i wrong again with your problem

This illustrates the discrepancy. Maya displays the 3d projection correctly in hardware shaded mode, but the actual render shows it's just not quite working. *grumble*

From yesterday's tests, I had the texture warp set to ON on the shape node of the shell.
I just checked it out after reading a suggestion from another list, turned it OFF, and now it seems to render correctly!
I can't believe I wasted all this time over a freaking on/off toggle.
Thanks for all your help.

The render output now matches the projected texture!
