ikRPsolver = Rotate plane
ikSCsolver = Single chain
With the RP solver you will get a pole vector that you can play around with (press "t" to show when having the ik selected). In my opinion, this gives you more control.
EDIT: I use RP for legs.

Actually I have never really used SC. You can read more about this here (http://www.accad.ohio-state.edu/~midori/03_750/handouts/IK_solvers.html).

SC is good for tentacles and anything you might want to swing in any old direction.
