I work in my house in 1440 x 900 in softimage with a 19 inches desktop PC, and while I can work ok, there are some menus that are hidden and I have to right click on them to show/hide more or less menus. I imagine 3ds Max would also be cumbersome to work with, but the program who suffers the most is Adobe After Effects.

Im currently looking forward to change my monitor to a 22" inches with a better resolution (I dont think I can afford more at the time)

I have an Asus G74SX-DH71 with 3gb VGA and 1920 x 1080 resolution. It's not as famous as HP and Dell but to be honest it's awesome. The price is very good too. I am using Maya and Realflow and Nuke and it's very good .

Minimum 1920x1080 is what you want to aim for.

If you don't absolutely need the mobility then you'd be much better off with a desktop. Assuming you need the mobility you can do a lot with 1600x900, but I wouldn't want to work that way all of the time. A good external monitor would be nice where possible.

Minimum 1920x1080 is what you want to aim for.

I'd say minimum is the wrong word there. The minimum is probably 1024x768, the recommended would be 1920x1080 but 1600x900 is more than 2/3 of that which isn't bad for working on the go.
