In Maya you can set your mental ray "Export Verbosity" to "Progress Messages". This will show in your Output Window (in Windows, anyway) what's happening under the hood in relatively plain English. Once in awhile you'll see a progress message that doesn't make sense, but it's still nice to have. There are ways to output this to the console somehow too, if you're stuck using a Mac.

Trust me, you don't want to know ALL of what's happening. There's way too much data to encompass. Miles of it. Really you'll just want to know Progress Messages at first, and then if you need more you can always bump it up to Full in the Export Verbosity.

Thanks.!! I have that book, but haven't had chance to read it... If you think i can find answer to my question in that book, i'll definitely read it..

It's a fairly broad question. If you are rendering to mental ray/vray/renderman, the scene is translated to a format that renderer can accept, that's basically all maya does, then it's up to the renderer.
