i think you installed it correct, but you can find it in the modifier rollout ;)

What version of MAX are you using? If it's 6 you no longer need solidify since Discreet was kind enough to write their own version. (works better and has more options too) You'll find that called "Shell" in MAX6

Otherwise if you're using 5 you don't find solidfy under utilities. It's a modifier and can found in that rollout. Also make sure that it's in a DIR that your plugin.ini is pointing too. Otherwise it won't load.
