View Full Version : Editable Poly vs. Editable Mesh for High Poly
FrageNSTEIN 01-20-2002, 06:21 PM For highpoly, is an EMesh as good as EPoly? Cuz, tho my experience is low no matter what, I DO have more experience with EMesh. DO they end up the same with meshsmooth?

I always convert my models to meshes in the end...But i use a lot of polys in the modelling process. Beveling faces is a lot easir with editable poly, but you can't weld vertieces in the same way. i kepp on converting between polys and meshes along the whole modelling process.
I have no experience of using poly for meshsmoothed objects....i tend to use as simple tools as posible when meshsmoothing. Edit mesh is more than enough then.

I think they end up pretty much the same. Once you start using Edit Poly, though, it's hard to go back to edit mesh, unless you like to be able to switch edges around. I find modeling with Poly is just so much easier on the eyes, as well as having the advantage of Meshtools. I love edit Poly. I sometimes switch back to edit mesh just to extrude an edge. But there may be a script out there to do this in edit poly. Don't know.

I haven't touched Emesh since the 4.2 update fixed the welding problems and the updated Epoly.dlo appeared allowing edge-cloning.
Meshsmooth will affect them both in pretty much the same way (there will be some really minor differences), so which one you choose will be decided entirely by your own preferred workflow.
one thing to take into account is redraw time... epoly objects must be internally converted to meshes before they are sent to your OpenGL card... A fix for this is to keep a "turn to mesh" modifier on top of editable poly.
also, in my experience, popping back and forth between them rarely causes problems. I even switch between epoly and emesh underneath physique and it still works fine.

In my experience switching between Edit Mesh and Edit Poly can be almost a must, as there seem to be a bug in Editable Poly that allows file sizes to keep doubling exponentially after a certain amount of editing. (I've had 600kb files turn into 13mb files without any additional polys this way). Switching just to editable Mesh and back to Poly seems to alleviate this. :)

Hey Mahlon, if you go here http://www.maxplugins.de/ you can download epoly2 its a new epoly.dlo file that will allow the pulling of edges in epoly mode!
