Hi,
Im using Maya 2013 on a Studio laptop 32-bit - 2.5 GHz Duo with 4 Gb Ram, maybe not the best hardware but this is what i got! =)
Im trying to render a model of a spaceship:
http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/9742/tenam.jpg
but every time I try to render with Mental Ray it ( no texture or light are implement yet) Maya crash in a couple of different way each time...
Most of the time I get this message:
MSG 0.2 146 MB error 011105: cannot start thread 3: Not enough storage is available to process this command.
..and maya wont respond anymore. I believe the storage ( Hard Disk) is not the problem since I have several GB free.
Other time I dont even get the message, Maya will just freeze or "Not responding".
Can somebody pls help me, or point to a possible solution?

Note: render wont crash if done in "Maya Hardware 2.0"
I do wish to use metal ray cause of the nice texture available...
Since Im a beginner PLEASE try to explain possible solution not in a too technical way, so i could follow ur suggestion.
Thanks for you help!

First if you have no lights, you'll simply see a black rectangle at rendertime. You can render a black rectangle almost instantly in Photoshop already!

As a test, go into your Render Settings and enable a Sun/Sky node. Render it again and see if you have the same issue?

Also, have you cleaned up your object at all? Deleted history or anything like that recently? Cool looking model by the way!

True, I didnt think about, "no lights, no view"! And neither I clean up my model before rendering...
I added Physical Sun and Sky, and Clean up (delete History of the model) and render it again with MR, but it will still crash.
Im just wondering... I often read about render taking ages, like hrs .. how can I know when Maya is working on the render or crashing?
Well, my model is very simple so shouldnt take that long, a prove is also the 3 seconds render in Maya Software.

Is there any other things I could do to "clean up" my model? Or is not that the problem?

My best methode: export to obj, import to obj in a new scene.

The Output Window will show you what's happening during a render, but you need to enable Progress verbosity in your Render Settings first. Warnings is also helpful.

Rendering can be quick or slow, depending on your processor(s) and the complexity of your scene.
