Hi there! I've been comming here for a long time but i never posted anything. This is my first attempt at drawing a portrait. I recently found (I'm 21) that I liked drawing but I don't think I have talent. I recently found there was a hole in my life and I think I found the cause. I just finished a College degree in Multimedia/Web design but I never had any art classes. I think art will be taking a bigger place in my life now. If I get good enough ill probably try to enter some drawing classes at university.

So here it is, my first portait from a reference photo. I would really appreciate some critics or advices. I hope you will be able to recognise the subjet. Please guess :hmm:

oh.. and I had a hard time with the hair..

Angelina Jolie, right?
I think I remember the pic...
You are going to need some work (of course) but I think you are off to a good start. I don't think it's fair to actually crit this drawing, because if it's your first, then that's exactally what it is. Your first. I can give advice as to how to treat certian aspects, like the hair you mentioned having problems with. Don't sweat the small stuff, don't draw each individual hair. Just try to mass it in, use the side of your pencil, just going for shapes and direction. And in the begining, just draw more and erase less. Or for practice, draw with a ball point pen from life. Do it at coffee shops or the mall or at home. You will get better faster if you look at shapes in 3d versus trying to make them up while looking a picture. Keep it up. It will take a while, you already have the talent, now you need to practice.

I'll get off my soapbox now, good luck.

Good work!

I think you can go with more contrast. Try using a darker pencil too:)

Looks like Winona Ryder.

I think you need to work a lot on the proportions of the face, then the shading.

Still, it's a great first attempt.
