View Full Version : space things
wanna make a little space movie to explore mayas particles more
but until I can use my particles I have to model a little space environment :)
And here are my problems, first, whats the best way to make a "space background", I have a nice texure with stars but it would not work as an image plane because the camera moves......
Next, how would you make a sun? A sphere with bump and glow looks really stupid :) Maybe with particles emitted from a sphere?
And heres my problem, how can I tell the particles that they should stop after a specified length?

for the first question : usually is sphere mapped with a star texture is the one if you wanna do it by texturing. problem with that kind is that you loose dimension. if you fly to the stars (to the edge of the sphere) you don' really see stars are coming towards you, or even fly by your side. so that could be just a good start. you may wanna add a particle system to the inner space of the sphere to simulate that effect. this will make it more believeable. put some randomness in the size of the particles and so on.
for the sphere you're way could be a good solution (i mean with particles). but it's definitly something you also need to do in compositing. for the glow etc. i would do it actually with a few particle system, to get the effect of errupting etc.
the glow would be done in compositing.
so hope it helps you for a good start
first thx
But still have questions :)
Why would I add the glow effect in a compositing program and not in maya?
And how can I tell the particles to stop after some length (because the sun particles should stop after some time)

main reason for adding the glow in compositing might be that only software particles are having the ability to glow :) hardware ones don't really glow. ok you can play a bit with incandescencePP but it's not very good controlling a glow (actually it's not a real glow). in compositing you can adjust the glow just as you want. no limitations etc.
to get the errupting particles back, there are more than one solutions. you could just use a drag field or another one, to get the particles back. use the velocity, accleration etc to drive the particles till a certain point and then the field is getting them back to the sphere. so it's just one possibilty. there are lot's of other (just with creation and runtime expressions would also be possible).
