Hey guys, i really need some advice from you. I want to learn lighting, to be able to get some realism for the character i am creating now. The problem is, i have no idea, what engine should i use, Vray or Mental ray?
And how should i learn lighting, materials and shaders?

For now, i am bit more confident, with modeling, setting up uv, and some how i am learning texturing, but with the lighting, materials and shaders
I am stuck.

Anyone please? I would really like to learn this, something simple, not too complex, just to be able to render my character/creature, for a demo reel.

For example like this

I would say, Vray is a better choice. Then, use google, gnomonworkshop, and help files. Also create WIPs in the WIPs thread on this site.

What software are you using?

Maya 2013 comes with a new SSS2 skin shader that's very easy to use.

There's a little teapot scene to get you started on the skin shader.

Well, i am using Maya 2013. Why Vray? Isn't Vray is used mostly in Arch Viz?

Vray began mostly as an Arch Viz product but has moved into VFX work as well.

I do not believe there is a release for 2013 yet. There is for Max 2013.

However, the SSS2 shader in Maya is extremely easy to use and simplified based on controls designed by a few different studios as feedback. The next iteration will lose the lightmapping in favor of an automatic multi-threaded workflow as well.

The catch is I would avoid the SSS2 phenomenon. It was not designed with the correct intentions of the SSS2 material and will make things a little complicated.

So any specific tutorial about Vray? Just i want to learn how to set up 3 point lighting, and i don't want to go in depth of lighting, because i want to stick with modeling and texturing.

If you want to learn the basic of lighting composition, you wouldn't need a specific tutorial for any software.

There are lots of those online if you do a quick search.

If you want/need to know the nuances of the lighting technical settings for a specific software then that would mean more digging.

The art of composition translates to all software packages.
