i am using my geforce 2 with max. when i try to use D3d, which i read that max supports really well now, i get nothing on screen. D3d is TOTALLY not working.

still doesnt work.:annoyed:
Hey,
I've been told that the latest nvidia drivers and max don't get along. Apparently u need to use the 21.83 driver

May I ask why you want D3D in max? It's much slower than openGL and it really doesn't make sense unless you have an effects programmer writing realtime shaders for you you need to try out in the viewports...

i am using win2000 on an athlon 1 gig.
i was hoping to use d3d as a way to display my game graphics closer to what the PS2 would display. i am a PS2 developer and i hear ages ago that max made some great real time advances with d3d. am i mislead?
also. i just installed a geforce 4 and now d3d and open gl work fine...and yes, d3d is slow!

I have no problem with getting D3D to run under my Win2k system (SP3) with a nVidia Geforce 256 card. Its probably some sort of weird configuration that you have going on your computer that is the problem.

Hi,
MAX 4 is much faster in OGL than in D3D but with MAX5 it's the opposite, D3D totally kicks OGL...
The other added benefit in MAX5 is that it allows for D3D mesh caching which means you can orbit a 600,000 poly scene in the viewport... (this is on a dual P4 Xeon 2Ghz and a quadro4 900xgl but still, the fact you CAN is nice)...
You have to turn on the mesh caching option and turn off the "show edges"(this just gets annoying cause it shows all the diagonals in a poly).
I also noticed it's way faster orbiting while in shaded mode without the mesh displayed...
BTW the latest detonator driver 40.41 givces me issues but it looks like nvidia took it off their site and reverted to 30.82...haven't tried it though....
The CG shader language thing is pretty cool too, nVidia will be releasing a max plugin for it soon (they showed it off at Siggraph)...
