Hey guys here is my entry for this months challenge, a little late but what do you think so far?

Typical...

I just start designing my environment and I keep clicking on posts that have executed better ideas far...well, better! :annoyed: :p

This is shaping up very well - I've always had a thing for trees with doors in them, very cool. :D

My only 'crit' at the moment would be that some elements of the image appear a little 'airbrushed' - mainly the catepillar (sp?). But that's pretty minor, mighty fine start!

I like the modeling. Love the compasition (why can't I ever spell that right?). I really love your colors. The only thing that looks really off to me now is the bluring from the DOF. It doesn't seem to be linear like from a lense but rather that it was blured by hand in post. Other than that I love it.

Thanks for the feedback guys...I will try and change the dof I actually did do it by hand. I was having trouble with max's DOF ..for some reason it always gives me artifacts....little black specs and some strange alaised edges...I don't really know how to get around that...If you guys have any suggestions that would be great...

I made a few adjustments and added some new stuff...I am planning in putting in a little walk way and a sign on the door...any other ideas you guys want to see please let me know and I will try and include them....Thanks for the comments so far...keep em coming...

One tiny little crit:

The step's(in front of the door) bump map, whether procedural or not, are too similar. Might be a good idea to randomized the bump values between the two.

Other than that, look'n killer!

Keep it up!

Definetly an adjustment in the right direction. Could you post a version without any DOF effects? Just post the render without touching it up in post.

Goregous, simply goregous. That is such a great refined and elegant piece. The change in texture on the steps really finnished it. I think it looks really great.

I agree with OrestesMantra, this picture does not look to be 100% 3D. I'd love to be proved wrong by seeing the wireframe, but those leaves, on the trunk and the rest of the image, look very much like a composite.

I think this last image is a big improvement over the other versions, but the inconsistent bluring is really hurting it. I also think that the color of the caterpillar should be darkened so it doesn't take focus away from the door so much.

You've still got plenty of time to perfect it!

Well I have to say that there is some touchup in photoshop, mostly I had to do the DOF in photoshop, so that accounts for the "inconsistant blurring" I think your talking about. I also romove some hard edges in photoshop and fix any little flaws with blending and painting, however I would say its 95% 3d.
I used little rectangles with uvw maps and an opacity map, these contain the small leave texture. Then this is over the top of a quadpatch with a blured leave texture, in order to fill in some of the holes...anyway...to answer your question....yes it is not 100% 3d but does it really matter? I mean look at any major studio and how much they touch up and composite..as long as the end result looks good what does it matter? anyway here is a wireframe look at my scene....Oh an pearson I deffinately agree with you about the caterpillar....I will be fixing that as well...thanks for the comments...and suggestions...see ya next post.

LOL that is so awesome hahaha. The technique you used for the leaves can either work really well or really badly. And I'd say that for you it worked really really well.:applause:

looks great. Reminds me of a hobbit hole or a gnomes home. Walking in the woods as a kid I was always looking for places like that. Thanks for the memories.

Thanks for the generous and some what strange assemblage of
kind words...however there is much time left and so many amazing pieces submitted to this challenge that surley there are others more diserving of "best enrtry yet!!"
I feel that my image has come a long way but has far to go!
I am thinking about adding a small creature that lives in this tree...any suggestions? and what would he be doing in this scene? I also want to make it a little more enchanted..so suggestions on that would also be great!

the character could be sitting on a bench outside his house enjoying his pipe.......

maybe a wrinkled old fairy woman.... or a farmer-goblin....... yeah, farmer goblin, no pipe......... straw hat, torn farmer-pants.... big fat hairy hobbit feet......... and his pet scarab beside him....... akennel for the scarrab with name plate, and feeding bowls outside it....

a mail box, yeah, a mail box would kick ass....... you know the typical cartoon type mail box.......

a picket fence around the garde maybe??

your right, there are some fab-tastic designs, and they are all getting soooo much better each day/week..............

Thanks for the suggestions Koas!! I think this will be a gnome home! and here is the start of my gnome character! the image on the right is a drawing by Brian Fraud (sp) anyway I liked him so I think he is what I will build for the scene...kinda reminds me of david the gnome on nickolodeon....anyway I will be poesting more of him next week...hopefully I can finish him before the end of the challenge!!
