View Full Version : What does U stand for and what does V stand for.

Okay, no one has ever been able to answer this question of mine. Not even Google.

So, what do they stand for? And W even?

I hate using an achronym that I have no clue what it actually means. I know, I am a nerd.

I'm not 100% sure, I think that they just represent an XYZ coordinate system. The only reason XYZ aren't used is so that you don't confuse texture coordinates with modeling coordinates. They don't actually stand for other words.

Yes ... what are X,Y,Z ?

What are s,t ?

what are i j and k ?

They are nothing but placeholders for us geeks.

yes, in math UVW is used as vectors names but they could have been anything. its just a custom to name them U, V, W since XYZ is the coords for planes that are often used within the graph's to caltulate the positions of the vectors/points.

Ah, thank you.

All this time, I've been thinking of them as an achronym instead of variables. I'll sleep better now.
