View Full Version : Animation: iPod Moovin and Groovin - 1min
betacam 11-22-2003, 09:18 PM What's up!
Threw this thing together testing out some ideas for expressions and thought I would throw it-up here to get some comments. Lightwave, After Effects, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, and Cleaner were used to create this.
MPEG4 - 3.8 megs - 1 minute - right click and save to computer (http://www.sheehe.com/cgnetworks/ipodMPEG.mp4)
QuickTime Format - 5.8 meg - 1 minute - Right Click and save to computer (http://www.sheehe.com/cgnetworks/ipodQTIME.mov)
Thanks for taking a look,
Mike

Your rendering is awesome. I like the beginning of the piece with the LCD screens.
I think the animation of the iPods dancing needs some work; they dance too slow. Because this has music, and really fast based music with an awesome beat, find the actual speed of the beat and animate to it. By doing this, you can get that "pop" to the animation. I think if you do this, you can get the viewer moving in his or her chair.
Love the rendering!

I appreciate the critique/comments Vrljc.
Do you feel the iPods dance slowly throughout the entire piece or just the “mob” of pods dance slowly?
Thanks…

Mostly the entire piece. When I watch it, I feel like I am waiting for the iPods to basically catch up with the music. I am not much of a dancer, but usually you step to the beat, and keep up with the rythm.
Also, even though your iPods are metal/plastic objects, experiment with using some morphs, or using a bone structure to squash and stretch the iPods when they jump. Think of each iPod as a bouncing ball.
Hope this helps! Also, can you tell us what kind of rendering stats you used? HDRI? And if you used raytracing for the reflections, what were your rendering times?

Thanks for the input.
I was really going for a "boy meets girl" thing and wanted to infuse more emotion then just dancing to the beat, but I'll take another look at it and see where it could be sped up. And I hear you about the "bouncing ball" where most of the time I would do that, in this instance I wanted it to look like a real iPOD moving rather than a computer generated iPod moving. I actually did have a small bone structure in the iPod to get more control over movement.. and man did I want to just bend the little suckers sometimes:)
I rendered straight out of lightwave with ray tracing but no HDRII did a little color correction in After Effects.
It took about 24 hours to render at 720x405 (1/2 hd) with 3 computers network rendering.

Thanks again for your input.
I would appreciate others comments as well.
