View Full Version : CelShading
capblood 06-12-2002, 01:22 PM Hi,
I'm working on a toon style project, so I must select the best renderer/plugin/material to achieve flat materials with projected shades.
I have been testing Digimation Illustrate! & CartoonReyes (and a mixed solution!), without the required result.
What about the new Brazil cartoon shader?
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

If you have it, you mught try AfterEffects. I just saw this tute: http://members.aol.com/forrestbro/how_cartoon.html
I haven't tried it myself, so don't blame me if it doesn't work, but it seems like a reasonable approach, if a bit of a hassle.
Hope it works for you.

Hey nice tip there monkeyboy...
OKay a trick Ive used is with Vecta 3d. Its one of the stupid cds that come with max, but It does have its use.
Simialer to the tut MonkeyBoy showed us, you have to use AEffects. render out on pass with a material like so:
Self Illumination 100%
Diffuse Colour - Falloff map
In the falloff map put in the coulurs you want like a dark red and a light red and clamp down the curves at the bottom.
Render this out as your colour pass.
Next use Vecta 3d to render out a "Outlines Only" pass, with the background white. bring this into AE and then use "multiply" for the blending mode and it should overlay nicely. You also (for some weird reason) have to scale the vecta pass down about 95% in the Y axis to make it fit nice.
Hope this helps.

To add to that you could also do the following all within max.
you could tighten up that falloff map and make it black and white, then turn it to fresel. then inside the white map add another falloff simialr to the first. This would give you a fair bit of control over what you are doing. problem is the line isnt clean...
This should get you off to a good start anyway.

Hey, have you tried no plugin at all? max it self can do cartoon shading, and you can control it a lot better. ;)
try stopping by www.3dluvr.com and look in the maxed out tutorials, in the left. You'll will find a tutorial on cell shading using 3dsmax standar material editor for that.
I've tried it! it's relativly goodm and renders realy fast.
one problem though, not very good with texture maps. But hey, no added charges!
any way, Hte good thing about it is that you can control it totally.
best regards!
