Hey there!
I ll buy myself a new workstation and after browsing the forum I come to the following stuff, since I am from Germany I used Alternate.de with a budget of max. 800€
I am working with Maya on a stereo shortfilm, and I ll have to deal with big scenes, when it comes to polycount. This machine will also do a lot of rendering with mental ray.

Since I have three workstations at home then, I ll try to build a little renderfarm.
I want to use the new workstation as the manager, ill connect them with a router, and use the internal raid system for the shared hard drive.
Or do you suggest to make a weaker station the manager, is there a difference?

so here we go:

CPU:

I decided to take the 1155 socket cause it saves a lot of money when it comes to the mainboard.

Mainboard:

Memory:

Hard Drive:

Graphics Card:
http://www.alternate.de/html/product/PNY/Quadro_400/880076/?
would this
http://www.alternate.de/html/product/PNY/Quadro_600/748208/?
make a huge difference?

Energy:

What do you think, is it a good and stable choice for my needs?
Thanks a lot!!

Never heard of that power supply brand so that's a gamble. Either of those graphics cards will perform very poorly. If you plan to work with a lot of polygons in Maya either get a higher end workstation card or just get a Radeon card.

Hey Olson, thx for the answer!

The powersupply, I just took one, that isn t too expensive, with enough power and some good reviews... ^.^

The graphic card - Id love to get a better card, but I cant afford.
I had some nasty problems with an expensive Nvidia Card some years ago (slow viewport...) - so I decided to go for the workstation card.
But if you say, a Radeon would work better for me, I ll take a look at those, or do you have any suggestions max 200$?

Thx a lot for the help!!

For graphics cards in that price range it comes down to which has problems you can live with. The low end Quadro cards will not handle lots of geometry well, they simply don't have the performance numbers to handle much.

The GeForce cards have been crippled for OpenGL applications for several generations so their performance is very poor despite having lots of performance in games with DirectX. The opinion among users is Nvidia has crippled the cards intentionally to drive users to the more expensive Quadro cards (with almost identical hardware but different drivers).

The Radeon cards have very good viewport performance but have poor performance when selecting things in the viewport and some artifacts with shaded wireframe views. FirePro cards are similar to the Quadro offerings but are also relatively expensive. If you decide the limitations that come with a Radeon are acceptable check out the Radeon HD 6870.

What Luke said...except that i've heard of no recent reports of anyone complaining of "selection lag" with AMD cards as long as the proper or current drivers are being used. "Selection" is now implemented in OpenGL as a standard hardware function call. :)
