View Full Version : Caricatures: The Matrix
Pi3141 11-21-2003, 10:44 PM These are some characters from the Matrix I've been working on Neo, and Morpheus. They are Caricatures , or Cartoon versions of the characters, whichever way you wish to look at it
I had a blast making them so I hope you like them too

Hahaha these are funny! Since I really hate the Matrix, I think I'd love it if you could make some really goofy poses, especially of Reeves :D
I think you did a great job of Reeves, good likeness (especially that totally deadpan "I'm so hardcore" look). As I've mentioned before, I still don't think that you have achieved as good a likeness with Fishburne (the massive head is awesome though hahaha), but that seems to be personal preference since nobody else seems to agree with me on that one :p
Great work overall again though, PiSong  Your work always gives me lots of laughs!

I think Morpheus's head looks a little thin and worn out; if you can squish his head vertically then I think it'd be better, heh.
great job on these caricatures - i only have a few crits:
keanu (henseforth will be referred to as "whoaa"), has a long, flat nose with flared nostrils, while his chin is small in comparison. i think you can emphasize the nose a little bit more, and chin less.
fishburne, on the other hand, has a huuuge jaw and chin.
i dig your work, tho - please keep 'em coming!

I liked your manson one the best so far i guess. These 2 don't quite seem at the same level. Neither have that blank humanless quality that seemingly everyone in the movies has. I swear the machines are more human than the humans in the matrix. Mr. Whooah man just isn't blank and vapid looking enough either, your characature looks too smart to be keanu.
I like the morpheus one better but as someone said i think his jaw could be exagerated more.

PiSong,
Your work is certainly an inspiration to us all. I am constantly amazed how fast you can do these models. However, I felt the likeness of Neo and Morpheus was not as strong as your past work. If I can't see the likeness right off, without context (costume, setting), a caricature has missed its mark.
my 2¢...

11-22-2003, 01:22 AM
Thanks!
I felt the likeness of Neo and Morpheus was not as strong as your past work.
I agree with you here. I had trouble.
I think it was because usually I get alot of the personality through the eyes and eyecontact. But with these characters they wear black glasses. It takes back from the personality of the character and makes it harder to show though.
:) Thanks for the nice comments too, i really appreciate that
Nice job Pi....nice to see you on the frontpage....great work:)
I still don't see the resemblance in the faces. The bodies look fine, but the faces are what we're supposed to be looking at. They have the right cranial structure for the most part, but the faces just aren't right whatsoever. Nothing personal again, I just don't see a match.
Edit: Keanu would look more like himself if you removed his cheek lines.

Matt, it's nothing personal, however I never quite know how to answer your replies. I guess I get stuck at the fact that you can't see any resembulance in any of the caricatures I've done.
I remember you told me you couldn't see any way how my marilyn manson caricature was marilyn manson, and now these have no resembulance?
I'm starting to think it's not my caricatures, but your eyesight. It's nothing personal, I just can't see how you can't see any resembulance at all, in these... or in Marilyn Manson.
"Removing Lines" is a little to vauge to warrant the blantant "it looks nothing like them"
Eitherway, I'm happy with the way they turned out, I personally can't see how you can't see a resembulance. Maybe It's me who's blind :surprised
Thanks for taking the time to check them out and reply

 Your work is so cool. You need to make an animation of Manson going against Keanu lol. That would rule lol. Maybe have it so Neo is going off on hows he's "The One" caricature then Manson just summons a whole hord of Agents Smiths lol. I don't know seems funny to me lol. "We've been waiting for you Mr. Anderson" lol

Wha?? My girlfriend hates it too. What's with you women? Don't you have any taste at all? This depresses me. I had to take my GF to see "Love Actually" because she came to The Matrix 3 with me. Funny thing is, I loved it and she hated it!
BTW, Matrix 2 and 3 have already made in excess of ONE BILLION Dollars this year! Jeez! I wish I had thought of it!
I agree that it would be a crime if you don't animate these in a Matrix Spoof!! I want to see Morph and The Oricle get freaky :)

hey, I am really digging your work, it's great. You seem to work uber smoothly and quickly and your models generally don't need many adjustments, it's really impressive. I don't understand why someone wouldn't see the likeness, maybe not instantly, but they are very similar. I'm not saying it's perfect or anything :D
I think morpheus is too light skinned, I remember him being a little darker. And maybe more spec for his skin would do nicely if you darkened to color a bit. I don't remmeber very clearly, and you probably went by reference, so I'm pretty sure I might be wrong. I think Neo's lines on his cheeks are part of a set of essential exagerations for his face, but that's only my opinion. At any rate, I don't agree with the one who said those lines are a bad idea, I think they are great.
I can see where the eyes covered by shades thing creates problems, but still, you've done a really cool job. I think if you got involved in animation as well, and did a good spoof, you would be doing a reallllyyy good thing :)
Something i always notice when i look at morpheus is that his face is just as wide as it is long almost
stakk4
11-22-2003, 09:25 AM
PI:
 awesome work! I have to join the crowd and beg for a spoof. You wouldnt need many sound bytes. Neo could just keep saying "There is no spoon. Whoa!" in all the scenes like his mind is still blown by the concept. Morpheus can just take every situation and say "It is the prophecy!" (ie: a pigeon flying overhead poops over Neo, he dodges them all in slow-mo, and morpheus says "It is the prophecy!")
eh, I'm sure you could come up with better parts, but the spoof is begging to be done, and we are begging to see it!
I gotta mention, I am a HUGE matrix fan, but I'd love to see a really spoofy animation

11-22-2003, 10:08 AM
lol this just came to me.
Neo standing there asking "What is the Matrix" the have Morpheus say "It is all areound us" then take your Manson/Micheal Jackson and Maddona and have them pop up and say something. Like Micheal could do his signiture croutch grab and yell. Madona could have her infamous MP3 fake "What the **ck do you think your doing stealing my music" bit and Manson singing a song looking demented like normal when he sings live (god I love that) and then maybe Agent Smith pop up with "Mr. Anderson well well" and then Morphues pops in "It is the Prophesy" then finish with Neo and his "WHoa" lol I don't know it's 2:03am and it just sounded funy to me.

Really really cool! U should make an digital celebrety deathmatch!

PS: Marylin rox! And your caricature is really good!
I suppose this is a personal thing - but if it wasn't for the bodies, I wouldn't have recognised either of them... Which is a shame because your Marilyn Manson was a very strong caricature. There's just something missing about these two.
I agree with doing Agent Smith - he's practically a caricature of himself already! :D

I'm with you on that one Leigh - If memory serves me correctly, you could do a bit with Morpheus by maybe making his cheeks a bit chubbier - I think Fisburne has got a bit more of a rounded lower half of his face...

Yeah, it'd be cool I think if you had Neo and Morpheus battling it out on one of those little plastic joy-stick controlled stickmen boxing things, where your opponent's boxer's head pops up each time you punch it... Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
Of course you'd need their ultra-serious faces to go along with this scene...

Nice effort...I appreciate the time you put into these models, but honestly I do not find them that appealing. I think the faces are off, and the essence of the caricature is not there...
maybe it is the fact that I feel you are missing a great opportunity to play wioth straights AND curves...here it appears to me like the characters are too curved, rounded, bubbly and soft...
check out the way this editorial cartoonist works with straights vs. curves... http://www.miltpriggee.com/

Thanks for your feedback Bent! I'm a huge fan of your work
I like that you know what your talking about :) I've toyed with different styles in 3D, this one is the best of both worlds. Straight methods of caricature in 3D don't tend to translate well when viewed from all sides, the bubble look, whilst limited, does.
I guess it's also a habit thing too. I've worked as a 2D caricature artist for years before I ventured into 3D working for publications like MAD magazine and several Japanese comics. I guess it's kinda hard to break the habit, but I shall try a few different styles, thanks for pointing that out
Thanks for the feedback too, and taking the time to reply, now get back to HALO 2 damnit!

There are features that can be accentuated with straights in 3D...the sharpness of a brow, the lines of a lip, sharper curves on the inner tunneling of an ear, the sharpness of an elbow or knee, the flat back of a finger...Keanu's sharp jaw line, Fishburne's nose...
...usually any time bone comes closest to the under side of the skin...
...if you look hard enough there are ways to get some straights in there, and still have it read "in the round"...
thanks for taking feedback so well. I wouldn't have offered any if I did not respect your work in return Pi3141.. [clever name by the way :)]
looking forward to seeing more...

11-23-2003, 06:33 AM
Hey your right! I can't believe I overlooked this :surprised
I was thinking about putting the concepts from 2D straight into 3D, without giving the conversion of the "Straight edged" method any thought.
I see what you mean now. An angular jaw would have better suited Keanu, than a long rounded jaw. I feel so stupid for not having throught of this earlier.
I just always assumed everything had to be "Bubbly" to look right in 3D. And the stylish side of an edged caricature would simply not work. I was converting the caricature, but not the styles across. :banghead:
I guess sometimes it takes someone else to point out the painfully obvious before we see it ourselves lol. Thanks, you have opened quite a large door and given some much needed room for improvment.
Cheers

I like neo's caricature. The difference between this one and Marilyn Manson is that Marilyn Manson has traits and attitudes that everyone can distinguish easily. Keanu Reeves (although he is a handsome guy) is quite common physically.
Try to describe him in a couple of words... A tall brown-haired boy with killer eyes.
I think Pi has nailed the details which make the link between his character and Keanu Reeves (the hair cut, the eyeglasses). The rest (proportion, clothing and poses) is the talent of a caricaturist.
Really I love that job.

Not trying to turn this into a Monkey bash, but I agree with the group here...PiSong does a fantastic job of making characters!

It was an opinion, and correct me if I'm wrong but I'm entitled to it. And again tell me if I'm wrong but I did say that the kid has talent. Perhaps using the word "crappy" was inapropriate and I appologize for that, I liked his Manson its a very good likeness. So to make everyone happy I'm going to bend him over and ram it right in and say, hey this is brilliant work man Looks JUST like them, they could use a little work but great stuff all together. Cut it out man, take your childish banter elsewhere. It's not appreciated here.
If you want to resort to calling people names, by all means go ahead but do it in your own thread, not mine.
I'm sorry you don't like the caricatures, That's your opinion and your entitled to it. I can't please everyone and I won't try.
As I've always said,
Opinions are like nipples, everyone has one or two
EDIT: Monkey, thanks for editing the "DORK" references out of your previous message, I'm sure the people they were intended for wouldn't appreciate your childish name calling. Smart move.

MonkeyJunk2003, it's one thing to have an opinion, while it's another thing entirely to insult people, post condescending remarks (you're younger than the artist here, and you're calling him "kid" - what's up with that?), and to then go and directly insult the artists intelligence.
Please, use a little more courtesy when posting comments on CGTalk in future. Like I said, you're more than welcome to your opinion, but you don't have to resort to nasty comments ;)
As for the comments that were edited out... Please don't ever post comments like that again - just as you are entitled to your opinion, so are others.

Neo is pretty cool dude! LOL too slick for sh@t to stick to. The face is great, immediately recognizable and the lighting and everything is really good here. *big thumbs up* the Morpheus isn't quite as polished. he could have been tweaked a bit better. gave ya 5 stars anyways for Neo. great work
I have a strong impression that when people make characters of the Matrix, or post threads with names like Neo, that everybody has an uncontrolable urge to look in that thread.
Why is that?
Is everybody jerking off when they hear Neo or an other Matrix-name????
I think your models are ok, but I also think that there are lots of other guys that make great stuff and won't get plugged that easy.
Don't get me wrong, good for you that your stuff is plugged, but I think that the plug-selection should be TOP NOTCH.
But who am I...
Well....in your opinion TOP NOTCH might not be this but why couldn't it be to someone else....I think they are great for one and different....I think Pi is the only guy making 3d caricatures in this forum....and for that reason alone deserves a plug....great job Pi...keep it up man:)
