i dont have max on this computer so I cant double check.
In your prefereces, save or file options is the place where you can chage these settings.

I chage my autoback time from 5 mins to 15 or 20 mins. And I change 3 to 5 files.
There is a checkbox to turn it off... but you shouldn't turn it off unless it takes a long to to save.
You should be saving as an incriment every now and then... for various reasons. Corruption is one of them.

If autoback/save is on.... then in your max/autoback directory should be the file.

It might have the extention .mx or .bak or something. try renaming the mx to max and it will open in max...you might not even need to rename it.
Dont hate the auto back feature... learn it's powers and luv the feature. It may save your life and the life on a strange cat.

Sorry to say that this is one of those times where multiple iteration files would save the day. I'm in the habit of making iteration saves whenever I do anything major to a scene. Autoback has saved me many a time, but not as often as good saving habits. ( I got burned and learned the hard way)

If you wan't to maintain sanity, don't turn autosave off! Just like Cullen said, set it to a higher backup interval. and to higher save iteration count.

One, I thought autosave caused MAX crashes, so I've turned it off... Oh, how I curse those days, MAX keeped crashing, and without autosave, I could only rely on Ctr+S, as often as possible... (crashing turned out to be not autosave's fault...)
Since than, my backup mechanism is up and running, with 5 backup files, in every 30 minutes.

Oh, and when working on bigger projects, also use the incremental file svae optin in MAX, helps alot, and not just by crashing! ;)

Cheers!
