I feel that even if Garey Campsey and his team did a really great job with the animation ( really great comping), the actual FX part could be improved. Wirginia focused on the FX and it turned out great.

I vote for Wirginia Romanowska. Really short, neat and effective. I liked the electric spark bursts at the first two impacts. That was a nice touch!

A close second would be Garrick Campsey and gang. That had some nice retro style visuals and the comp work on mixing the clouds footage with cg was really well done.

Cheers to all who participated!

I thought Wirginia's was the best in terms of visual effects. The sparks, the asphalt pushing up, the weight of the ship falling and the realism of the smoke all sold it. Grading was top notch.

Garrick Campsey, Ben Allen, Kyle King's entry came very close with their dynamic action sequence and the sheer amount of effects packed in. The colour scheme rocked and the long shots were spot on. Loved it! Why aren't there more retro saucer films being made these days?!!!

I have no problem showing support for your friends but not at the expense of other artists who worked hard in this contest. Let's keep the votes fair and unbiased please.

I think you did great job, and I learned a lot from your WIP tread. I know some things could be better, but I have the same feeling (only much stronger) about my own entry. I wish one day I can be part of team like yours, and make amazing CG.

I've noticed a lot of brand new users registering and immediately using their first post to vote for a certain person here - if I find any reason to suspect that this person is registering multiple accounts to vote for himself or getting all his friends to just randomly sign up and spam votes, he's going to get banned. Foly, I'm talking to you.

as yo say, maybe Foly got his friends to vote for him , but this man shares that piece of work on Facebook acc & groups, some people just like it & vote for him & if it's not illegal to share this page on other sites then you can pan him away, maybe you didn't see his shot as the best, but you must be fair & democratic also...

If that's true, I think you should Foly to eliminate the competition.
This is a "game", no need to do anything like that, people must vote if you like your job.

That's not the point of this competition, it's for whose fx are the best, not who has more friends. Getting your friends on FB to vote for you because they are your friends is not considered fair competition. Because if someone has more friends they will win simply because more of them voted for their friend's entries, and it would not have any bearing on actual skill or quality of work. That constitutes as spamming or "rigging" a competition, This is why most competition have judges because it prevents biased votes. I personally don't know anyone in this competition or care who wins, I do care though that the competition is fair and unbiased.

All,

While I would love to see only fair voting and unfair practices should be banned, we should be careful not to place blame without any evidence of wrongdoing. Blaming someone without reason is as unfair as someone rigging the competition.

If there is a way to know for sure that anything untoward is going on, then by all means take appropriate measures. But unless that is the case, we should not raise accusations.

I also do not know anyone in this competition and am only interested in the outcome as an VFX aficionado. I do care about fairness though so I thought I'd raise a point that seems to me has been lost in the tenor of this thread.

TheGrak

I'm happy to be a part of this competition, and I don't really care who wins cause it's about learning and pushing yourself and each other. If you win but haven't learned anything, then what is the point of winning?

Overall, I see the Fx Wars Competition and voting system as effective. It could be further balanced by always having 3 judges (rotating cast) that count for 60% of the final vote, while registered online voting would count for the other 40%. This balances the judge's individual voting power along with the forum's voting power, and keeps online voting to a maximum influence of 40% of the final vote.

Finally, I think foly's video had some great fx, as well as Wirginias. I think they both did a really solid job and I wish I could vote for both of them. I can see the hard work they put into each frame, and that hard work should not be overshadowed by accusations. Fundamentally, the design of the voting system allows for exploitation, so redesign the system.

I really think they both should win, so I'm voting for both Foly and Wirginia. :D

I agree with everything you have said, I just find the correlation between votes from Egypt all favoring one person and Leigh's observations on many first time posters voting for said person as a bit too coincidental to be just chance. That's all I'm saying.

EDIT: Foly has contacted me and addressed my doubts in PM. I apologize if anyone thought I was attacking Foly , I just wanted to make sure everyone is getting their fair shot. As I said before I do not know anyone in the contest nor do I have any special favors / agendas, I just want to make sure FX Wars will be something that people will want to join in the future without worrying about it being unfair.
