Here's an application that should change the playing field a bit.

Smoke on the Mac looks exciting!

Editing, nodal compositing and vfx tools in a single package.

I don't know... I think they're trying to cramp too much under one app. I could see the benefits of having comp, effects, grading and edit under a single app but on the other hand I doubt they can have the same power / flexibility of dedicated apps like nuke, fcp and davinci resolve.
Plus if Smoke still costs 20.000 usd is much more expensive than all the apps together :)

Well you certainly have a point there on price. It's not for the casual user. Definitely more of a studio tool. However that level of integration will be quite nice especially when tied to Autodesk's other DCC applications. I hope it does well.

I took a look into pricing and you'll be happy to know that the base price of Smoke has dropped from $15k to $3495.

Didn't find the pricing either but if that is true then yay! I signed up for the trial version, will be interesting.

that price is correct and the new UI is a huge thing.
But why does ADSK promote the idea of all-in-one solutions for effects&editing,
but totally fragments its 3D business with suites containing maya max SI... :curious:

Thats interesting - we looked at purchasing Smoke when it came out. Would have been well peaved had we purchased it and seen the price drop this much.

It was one of the direct questions I asked at the demo - if the price would drop as AD have done in the past with Edit - Paint and effects/Combustion. etc
