View Full Version : Male Head wip
ThirdEye 11-21-2003, 04:12 PM There are still many parts of the maps missing (the colour map doesn't even have moles and colour variations, there's no beard, no hair, no eyebrows...) but i wanted to show you the wip and get some precious advice, feel free to crit :)

excellent work:thumbsup: wires would be nice. What size res are your maps? Did you create this from one ref image or sets of references?

Hire's a wire http://www.metagons.com/images/SI0213.jpg
The res of the map is more or less 3500x1600, i used a ton of references as usual, i never use one, i try to create a new character taking some parts from a reference, some others from another one... :)

Wow!
very impressive, I think the only things I would change are the inner folds of the ears seem to stick out a bit to much and could do with softening slightly and there is too much discolouration in the white of the eye for my liking. It would be nice to see this one one with a full head of hair, maybe slightly greying. You must be very pleased with it, great work,
Peter

Really nice wrinkles. Did you create those using projection painting mode. Did you create any custom brushes for the wrinkles?
I like your wire work, your cage is very fluid and it reminds me of John Feathers's(Gollum facial team) style of wire cage.

Thanks for your comments Peter, could you explain me better what you mean about "too much discolouration in the white of the eye?". Do u mean it's too white/bright?

"Really nice wrinkles. Did you create those using projection painting mode."
Uhm.. i haven't used projection paint so far, i haven't needed it. I think you can avoid using PP at all if you have a very relaxed uv.
"Did you create any custom brushes for the wrinkles?"
Well, i played with the basic settings of the Bp2 brushes, but nothing more.
"I like your wire work, your cage is very fluid and it reminds me of John Feathers's(Gollum facial team) style of wire cage."
Haha, yes, i noticed the same thing when someone posted the wire of Gollum in the general discussion forum, i'm quite happy about that :)

the eyes are awesome, do you paint the texture in photoshop ? or is it an an actual image of an eye?

The white part with the veins is painted, the iris is painted too, but i found it on the web, i just had to crop it and play with its hue/saturation settings.

Still your best (what have you done in the meantime...this took so long thirdy? ) and really nice skin effect (though there might be some blood missing ;) just add some redish parts. Probably the new SSS might help you). Modeling is great, nothing to add.
Keep it up!
P.S.: Love the ears :scream:

What have i done in the meantime? Uni, uni and then again uni, some testing of 8.5 as u already know, and in all honesty all the month of october hasn't been a good period, i did almost anything with 3D. Luckily november has been better, the maps didn't take too much time so far, just a couple of days, and the modeling was already finished a lot of time ago. :hmm:

On closer inspection I think what I am seeing on the lower two images is the reflection in the perhaps the image it is reflecting could do with bluring. Great work none the less, are you planning to add hair? I look forward to seeing your progress,
Peter

I've always thought the bump mapping on a face would be the hardest layer to do since it extends evenly around the entire surface, and I like what I see here. So am I to just understand that you modified a spunge brush of some kind and painted over the entire skin? In the 3d painter window or in the 2d texture window?
The forehead lines and crow's feet I can do somewhat easily, but to this day I have trouble with an even pore distribution. It's hard to keep it from being strechted along some places.

If you are using BP R2, projection painting mode will help with that problem.

Wanna know the truth? The basic layer for the skin bump is a simple tweaked procedural noise that has been baked using the baker and slightly modified afterwards.

Great work! Very impressive asymmetry.
The only gripe I have is the nostrils are to symmetrical. Everyone's nose is an amalgam of their biological parent's, split down the middle. Usually the nostrils are quite distinct from each other, as if from two different noses. Also it is rare for the midline of the nose to run directly along the midline of the face. Usually the tip of the nose ends up slightly to one side or another.
Just random musing, you are certainly working at a high level. Congrats on all your hard work.

it's a nice model, very clean.
however, I find that either the forehead edge is too far recessed or the cheekbones protrude too far out, giving an unnatural profile.
Damn - I canīt find anything to crit!!!
Iīm very impressed and I agree with Samir - itīll be your best.
PS: Have had no time to check out IRC  Embarrasing!! I will - itīs a promise.

Damn I love your work ThirdEye, fantastic as usual, the only thing that does bother me a bit are the lips for some reason, they somehow look slightly feminine to me, may be the colour or something. :buttrock:

My only real crit is that the lip color is too peachy. Needs to be more redish IMO. I also agree with other comments above re: nostril symmetry, ear folds, and profile line.
Looking great ThirdEye!

Nice looking head, Third! Very cool :D
Really nice proportions, and tension in the forehead (something you always seem good at). The main thing about the model that bugs me slightly is the lips - they seem a little too orangey/pink. The other small thing that bugs me is that the bump is a little too strong, but I'm sure that will be changing. The specular is also making the skin look a little rubbery, but again, I'm sure this will be changing - it just needs some variations :)
Great stuff as always

well i don't know what they are teaching you at uni...but it certainly works when it comes to 3d...i mean that mesh is slick...
what happened to a guy like this with a military jacket...did you finish him...or is this him...or something else..
good work as always...i mean he can do cars and heads...is there no stoppin him...:D

Very nice mesh, Third Eye ... I love the asymetric wrinkles on his forehead. But, I'd have to agree with the others about his lipstick ... it's smearing. :D
Nice work
I also think the cheek bone protrudes to much or is not tapered enough or something, its just a bit to prominent.
The skin color is to me a bit to yellow orangeish,it makes it hard to believe there are blood vessels beneath the skin I feel.

As usual impressive Third! No other crits. Great! :bounce:
Haha, this is just too much!
Damn this one is looking soooo sweet!
Love the skin shader and the model itself is looking awesome as well.
The crits have already been stated and i cant find anything else to crit on this awesome head!!
Ur best work yet IMO!! :)

Thank you all for your critz, they've been really useful. About the cheekbones: i wanted a very strong look so i kinda exaggerated them, Leigh told me he even reminds her of Ed Harris :D The skin colour is really flat for a simple reason: the colour map isn't even half complete, i still have to add veins, moles, colour variations, spots... About the feminine lips and the rubberish appearance of the skin: wait till i add the specular map, it's not there yet :D I already fixed that profile issue, thanks!

great work :)
Thats coming along very nicely
The groove between the lips, the high points look a smidgeon to high to me,or it might be because the lip color does not bleed into the skin around them just a bit.

The character's left side (his left) looks better than his right concerning the upper lip area. The groove (philtrum), looks like it's having some pink extending too far in this area - I would push the lip color back inside the border of the lip (vermilion border) and give it more of a transition or bleed it a tad more as kiwi mentioned. Other than that - it's looking kick arse!:buttrock:

I think it is great. I have a minor critique that someone mentioned. The lips do look like they have lipstick on them. I see the lip color above the lip line on the upper lip. To me it gives it a sloppy lipstick look. Many lips have a lighter shade just above the lip line on the upper lip.

Great texturing job T_E (with the exception of the already-noted lip bleeding).
agree with the rest stated, but man....this one is gonna be so incredibly realistic once finished!

The eyes before (the blue ones) were better. First of all the reflection in the updated ones are too high (you cannot see no iris at all anymore) and the rest of the eyes are not "slimey" enough. It looks to dull (is that the correct english word?).
Roughly said: thereīs no life in those eyes
