View Full Version : Extrude spline with hole

Hello all,

I have looked through the forum, esp. Iguiniz.X's interesting thread (at http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7286&perpage=15&highlight=spline%20extrude&pagenumber=2). But I can't find a solution to my problem.

I wish to make a spline into a solid object using extrude. I have several cutouts inside the area, so I want them to extrude a holes. Despite trying everything I have been able to find online (make sure no splines are overlapping, make sure all splines are on same plane etc...) I cannot get the holes to show up. What is most maddening is that I had the same exact problem on a project I did only a little while ago, fixed it, and now can't remember or recreate how I did it.

Has anyone encountered this problem?

Thanks,

The Simian Beatbox.

ps. here you see the thing: at left the splines, at right the result.

Makes sure that all your verts are welded together (no stray open ends), that all of the shapes are attached together (making one spline) - and finally if you've done all that - try changing the capping type from Morph to Grid. You may also want to try moving the spline that makes the eye on the right of your picture a little away from the edge.

These steps should work, but there are times when the splines can be too complicated for Max to cap correctly - hopefully this isn't one of them and it'll all be fine! :D

Look for self-crossings in each spline. If there is one, I'll say it's on the mouth.

Yes I had the same prob with my current challenge. and I found out that it also has something to do with in what order you attach the slines that should make the hole.
Did you make the splines by selecting new shape or did you make them each appart and then attached them to each other.
if you did the last thing try to do it this order.
>Select the head shape then
>attach the eye shapes to it.
now it may be working.
if you did did reverse you may get the prob you are having now.
I hope this helps.

Order of attachment in splines doesn't affect the way it extrudes - as long as you shapes are inside a preimter shape and none are 'broken' then it should be all good.

Yes now you say that I remeber,
my things were broken when I had that problem.

Mokey boy why don't you post a Zip file and I try or somebody else could try to fix it and sent it back to you.
I can try this weekend when I get back at the machine

Thank you all for your suggestions.

I think I tried most of these before (attach in different ways, check for stray vertices, sacrifice chicken, dance around room chanting etc...), with no success.

I have now got it working. I had fixed this problem before, so I just rebuilt the face from scratch in that file, and then brought that back into the current file. So I'm still in the dark about what went wrong, but at least it's working now. -sigh- Ignorance is bliss.

Thanks all.
