OK, I know there are all of these sub-D plug-ins to help simulate the translucence of human skin, but what are your other techniques for getting convincing hand-painted skin textures that work in all lighting situations.
The problem I have with some of the sub-d plug-ins for Maya is that they look great in very specific lighting situations, but crap out when light gets brighter or changes color, etc.

I understand the general components required in texturing --color, specularity and bump -- but what else do you guys throw in there? Do you build up layers as in oil paintings or somehting else?

Any help in this is appreciated.

Thanks,
