Ok, i posted about EVDs making a possible entrance into the market.
Well here is a codec that they will use.

Everything you'd want. DIVX has some competition now.

Are they both the same file size?

they were both small.
same rez for both.
vp6 was a tad bit larger file size. no biggy.

and vp6 streams beautifully too. Watched Xmen on their site full screened flawlessly :)

I remember on2 before Divix was around. It was used to stream video on the Sci Fi channel's web site. Had great quality for its time.

Interesting..

I did a default settings test against Divx 5.1, and it was VP 1.3MB to 12.9MB Divx, with the Divx having slightly better image display.. I'll continue mixing up the settings, but this looks really nice.

EDIT:

OK, the image quality is about the same.. except.. VP's default settings don't detect a new frame (new scene in a movie etc) which should be clean, instead it takes 5-10 frames to crisp out.. shall tinker with the settings

Check out XVID. It is totally free and better quality than Divx and creates smaller file sizes. It is from the group of people that got pissed off after Divx went commercial and left the OpenDivx(Project Mayo) people to rot.

this is a bad experiment. its not exactly a fair test. ie - i don't like wmplayer and i find i get better quality divx movies on divx player.

if both movies were done with exactly same file size and format but encoded in different codecs, and examined with lots of different movies then its a reasonable test. but then again which version of the divx codec are you using? not everyone uses the same player, others use winamp etc, does the same results come out when u test the videos on all the different players?

You can play Divx movies with a Divx player or WMP just like you can play VP6 movies with the player or WMP. It's a codec, do whatever you want with it.

The test was done with the same source footage, and they were the same bitrate. I did try to make it the same as possible. I'm using the most recent Divx and most recent VP6. Do you think i'm trying to sway the results or something? I'm not affiliated to either side and don't care, i wouldnt' have posted here if i thought it was a trashy codec.

In regards to testing different sources, just look at the website man, there are like 5 sample comparitive videos! I tested a few myself. I'm not gonna post 50 comparisons, just to pease the audience, just do it yourself. Jeesh.
